Open House attracts students, parents to school On April 24, Port Perry High School held one of its most successful Open Houses in recent years. Large numbers of parents, former students, and friends visited the school to see the many student-centred and operated projects, activities, and demonstrations. Popular spots were the Science Fair project display, the Technical Shop areas, the Foods and Cooking demonstrations, as well as the Art rooms, the simulated business practice office, an innovative beginner (Gr. 8) typing class, biology demon- strations, and actual band practices and play rehear- sals, the latter for the school's May 9th Drama Night. Of special interest were an elaborate computer display which would even check your biorhythms, designed and manned by Mr. Watson and his .math students, mini performances of Romeo and Juliet by Mr. Arculus' Gr. 10 English classes, and a strikingly well- -planned and educative Geography display designed and executed by Mr. K. Jones and his students. Ongoing activities in- cluded the showing of films, the full use of both gyms for a wide variety of athletic activities, including gymnas- tics, volleyball, and basket- ball, and an innovation this year, the Bookworm Cafe in the Library, featuring folk guitar, coffee, book browsing and a relaxed atmosphere. Librarians Cecelia Kennedy and Jean Hankey are to be complimented. Meanwhile, student announcers punctuated the 7 - 9 time period with up-to- date announcements of events for the visitors' infor- mation. The evening's busiest and most popular sport proved to be the cafeteria, which had gone Disco for the evening. With DJ Martin Kuypers, senior students demonstra- ted disco routines, then competed feverishly for a trophy while an approving crowd applauded. Later, the unusually large number of student volun- teers who had participated in the Open House's many activities were treated to a short party at the 'Disco.' Remarking later to Chairmen Lefort and Lackie, Principal Doug Williams enthused that he had re- ceived many favourable comments concerning the evening and the opportunity which it had well afforded the community as a whole to see the school in action. Port Perry has once again done itself proud.
