Mr. Milton Butson of Port Perry called on Mr. and Mrs. Nuclear power folly: reader - (From Page 5) distort the facts leaves me like the messenger who is shot 'because he brings his superior bad news. Since the Three Mile Island nuclear accident people have come forward including nuclear scientists to the Ontario Select Com- mittee on Nuclear Power with alarming warnings of the unsafe CANDU reactors used by Ontario: Hydro in Pickering and Bruce gene- rators. Thirty of the 32 boilers already installed at the B plant in Pickering must be ripped out, at a cost of at least $35 million plus another $50 million in lost production. : Hydro has admitted the the reactor shut down. Some safety measures were instal- led backwards. Prior to all the latest blunders by Hydro it is costing every household in Ontario $75.00 on your hydro bill to pay for the millions wasted by Hydro's poor management. My main concern is the escalating cost of hydro, and a continuing proliferation of nuclear plants to a point we never get out of, with such massive expenditures in the billions and billions. There are other sources of safer hydro. The word itself means water power. Ontario has some 30 to 40 untapped water power sources that are renewable and non-polluting, and much cheaper than hazardous atomic plants that are being continuously shut down for costly leaks or repairs. Seven-tenths of the world is water. Water is H-20, (2 The Oshawa Shrine Club ANNUAL SHRINE CLUB RING RCUS OSHAWA CIVIC AUDITORIUM SAT., MAY 12th SHOW TIMES: 8:30a.m.-12:30 p.m. -4:30p.m. -8:30 p.m. ADULTS: $4.00 CHILDREN: $2.00 ADVANCE TICKETS ADULTS $3.50 CHILDREN $1.50 Available at Don Forder Insurance, 24 Water Street; A.C.A. Western Canada has trillions of cubic feet of natural gas that is claimed to be surplus. This could be used to power hydro. It is clean and non-polluting and we already have the pipe- lines to Ontario. We also have unending solar power and windpower sources. The Royal Commission on Power Planning headed by Dr. Porter has exposed us to the truth of what's going on at Hydro and the lies they have been telling us. Hydro spends huundreds of thousands of dollars of our money to tell us to conserve while they export $500 million of power out of the country! Pierre Berton and Charles Templeton both experienced journalists exposed a great number of falacies to us by Hydro. They claim that not one nuclear plant in the entire world has ever oper- ated at full power due to dangers never told to the public. A bulletin on the front page of the Toronto Star (April 28, 1979) stated "Ontario Hydro is flirting with a nuclear accident at its .Bruce generating plant, 90 miles north west of Metro that would be worse than the recent one at Three Mile Island, Pa., a senior Hydro official says!" U.S. CLOSES 7 A-PLANTS FOR SAFETY CHECKS - The government order affects plants built by Babcock and Wilcox, which added $85 million to Ontario Hydro's costs when 32 faulty boilers had to be replaced at Pickering B. plant. To be forwarned is to be forwarned. None are so blind as those that will not see. Tomorrow may be too late.
