"Pierre Trudeau has cut iback medicare payments, and Joe Clark wants to tax the sick," said Mr. McLaughlin. He noted that it was C.S. Mr. McLaughlin said that an NDP government would increase the pensions paid to elderly widows who often find themselves in financial trouble when their husbands pass away and the pension is cut in half. He urges senior citizens who feel they are "being pushed around' to unite at the ballot box and wield some power. Concentrating on social issues, the NDP hopeful in the riding of -Durham- Northumberland said the party would implement a guaranteed income plan "to wipe out poverty', and suggested the funds for this would come from economic measures to create jobs in resource processing. He also' said the NDP would impose a surtax on Canadian capital being invested outside the. country when that invest- ment threatened a worker's job in Canada. He cited the Inco mine development . in South America as an example which cost 3600 jobs at Sudbury. Mr. McLaughlin who lives in Janetville and teaches high school in Markham was nominated to run in this riding in November, 1977. After the meeting he told the Star that he is continuing with his teaching job during the day and campaigning at night. He did take half a day off work without pay last week to address the senior citizens, and also to visit areas in the southern part of the riding. He said the NDP in this riding expects to spend about $12,000 during the campaign. When asked "after the meeting what programs he personally would like to see should the.
