|} e FTAA ES CA Ae FNS AN SR LL IBA A LA J aA Smoking can be a disastor for unborn baby in womb More than 90 percent of adults believe smoking is harmful to their own bodies. But the number of teenage girls who smoke is climbing. And only two-thirds of young women smokers realize smoking can harm an unborn baby. Pregnancy is a perfect time for women to kick the cigarette habit for good, says the Lung Association. A recent survey showed that 35 percent of women quit smoking during pregnancy; 32 percent cut back. Another study at Stanford University Medical Centre, which featured special techniques to aid behaviour changes, found that one-third of pregnant smokers in the experiment quit smoking and were still nonsmokers when they were contacted nearly a year later. A Lung Association book- let for pregnant women, "Smoking and the Two of You", presents these sober- ing statistics to young mothers-to-be: women who smoke during pregnancy have more stillbirths, spon- taneous abortions, and premature deliveries than women who don't smoke. The Christmas Seal people advise all pregnant women to stop smoking to create a life-enhancing environment for their unborn children. "Your unborn baby doesn't breathe before the moment of birth. But it practices some motions of breathing by exercising certain chest muscles," says the Christmas Seal publica- tion. "'the effects of ciga- rette smoke are so im- mediate - and so powerful that your baby's -practice movements slow down after you smoke just two cigaret- tes. The more cigarettes you smoke, the more you inter- fere with your baby's preparations for life." The adverse effects of secondhand smoke on newborn babies and young children is also presented in the booklet. For a free copy of the booklet for yourself or someone you love, contact Durham Region Lung Association, your local Christmas Seal people, at 723-3151.
