They were Janet Bruce (poetry), Mike Stokes (prose), and Belinda Espley (prose). In addition to the writing competition, the week's events included seminars on writing, a lecture on Cana- dian Literature, a discussion about journalism and poetry readings. On Wednesday, Professor John Stevens from the University of Toronto spoke .to seventy students and read excerpts of comic scenes from Canadian novels and poetry. Thursday's session began with poetry readings before an audience of eighty students, by Paul McGraw, Bill Dunphy, Denis Stokes, Bill Gibson, and Cecilia Kennedy, all members of the Toronto Writer's Workshop. Ms. Kennedy is a teacher at Port Perry High School. " Following the readings, students joined various seminars in which they discussed science fiction, the process of writing, getting published and the character of writers. In another seminar, participants wrote songs. To conclude Canadian Literature week, Mr. Williams awarded the writing prizes. Cath Port Perry High School prin cipal Douglas Williams presented these three students with their awards for excellence in writing. First prize went to Janet Bruce [centre] for her poem; second was Belinda Espley for her short story and third to Mike Stokes for his personal reflections. to hear guest poets recite their work and discuss Blackstock W.I. The Blackstock Women's Institute met in the Community Hall on Wednes- day, April 4th. Following the singing of the Institute Grace, 16 ladies certainly did Justice to an unplanned pot luck meal at 1 p.m. Later Mrs. Shortridge opened the meeting with the singing of the Ode with Mrs. R. Taylor at the piano followed by the Collect repeated in unison. Mrs. S. VanCamp read the minutes and the correspon- dence. Mrs. R. Bradburn gave the treasurer's report showing a healthy balance. Bills were paid including the $75. fee for a delegate to attend the Conference in Waterloo on May 1st and also payment for our foster child in Hong Kong. . Mrs. Archer has made and donated a lovely crib quilt which is for sale. This being the annual meeting and also the first meeting for 79-80 all reports were réad and accepted by the auditors.
