Anne had an ankle accident earlier in the day but found an able and effi- cient hostess in Clara Dowson. The Devotional period which had the theme of Friendship was conducted by Mrs. Bonnie Gerrow's group. As visiting month has come around again it was felt that a roll call requesting names of people who might wish to be visited would be helpful. Appreciation notes were received from John and Edna Beckett, Mabel Strong, Mrs. Elva Martyn, Mrs. Nellie Miller, Mrs. Flora Muffitt and a lovely letter from Mrs. Amy Smith. We also express apprecia- tion for the three donations received. The treasurer Marion Carter had a detailed and satisfactory report to cover the various sales, art and craft show, dinnner for road men, etc., It was necessary to make arrangements for our part in the museum opening May 19 and 20. Watch for motices re this important event, which is being well organized around the special lady who will be present to open the event, followed by demon- strations and various attrac- tions. Refreshments will be available on the grounds and at the Museum Church. iti Church Services PORT PERRY CHARGE Rev. R. After the business was settled, Jan Gerrow conduc- ted a puzzling contest asking each one to suggest two things they might take while making a visit. She there upon decided if they would be admitted. Finally, every- one realized they should have named two items beginning with their own initials. Then Marie Clark got everyone busy making a list of words that could be made up from the letters in "Friendship". The prize winner for the longest list was Reta Reader. Anne Alstein finished the program with an interesting poem on Friendship. We are pleased to welcome Orval and Ruth Heayn back to the Island after several years in Kingston. They are living in the former home of Ruth's parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Sam Arnold. We also welcome the new residents Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mercado and son Peter to their new solar heated home on Con.6 beside Mr. and Mrs. Max Stichmann. We wish to express our sympathy to the family of Mrs. Valorie Price (wife of Dr. John Price on the main road of Scugog Island). His recovery is slower than could be desired but with therapy and time, improvement is noticed. Anson Gerrow is following medical directions and has been able to help with some seeding. His courage and fortitude is undaunted. Two weeks ago Mrs. Clara Dowson had a very pleasant surprise when her employer Mr. Hank Dejong and his staff arranged a dinner in 'her honour at Haugen"s Chicken Barbecue to cele- brate ten years of employ- ment at Hank's Bakery. Family and staff excepting one managed to be present. Durig the course of the evening, Clara was presen- ted with an engraved silver tray from Mr. and Mrs. Dejong and two crystal bud - vases containing china roses from the pastry staff. Last weekend Clara and Joe Dowson visited Clara's cousins Mr. and Mrs. Chas Woodcock in Port Elgin. When they arrived home, they were surprised to be met by a friend, John Andrew from Wabush, Labrador. Joe had made his acquaintance when he went to Labrador. Wabush is a small modern town in a mining area, but can be reached only by train or plane. Mr. Andrew was happy to see so much green grass as they are still using - snowmobiles at his home, On Sunday Rev. Linstead conducted the Service for the smallest congregation since February. . Maybe people were depressed with the rain or tired after so much previous activity or maybe Spring has a strong call. We were pleased to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Lunel and tiny son from Lakeside Beach road. Rev. Linstead's sermon was based on 2 words 'We know' which appear at one place in the Bible 11 times within 21 verses. In our lives this can represent dogmatism in people who become difficult to work with. Some of us are dogmatic in never admitting a mistake. In religious matters, some are sure of nothing. Next Sunday will be another busy day at Church as preparations are being made for at least three baptisms on Mother's Day. May 13. If anyone else is interested, please contact one of the Ministers in good time. We told you the Spring Concert was a very high calibre. To prove this, the performers have been invited to present it at Myrtle, Saturday, May 26. Perhaps there will be others. We are very proud of this group with their leaders. We wish to give them all our support and encouragement. The new piano and organ have led to deeper things. This could not have been accomplished without the help of many interested people. Tickets for the Institute quilt are going well. They can be purchased from Mrs. Alva Thompson, Mrs. Janis Richardson, Treasure Corner, Mar-Laine Boutique or Institute members. The Draw will be made at the Annual Auction at the Island Community Hall, July 14. We hope you are planning to purchase your tickets from Pat Adderley or Charlene Oram for the Community Dance Satur- day, May 26. They are usually sold out early Mrs. Irene Carter has had one of her annual bad colds but is now recovering quite well. ' Recently, Betty Reader, Helen Hortop, Alva Thomp- son and Reta Reader, representing the "Head" Community through the U.C.W. called on Mrs. Lil Moore in Port Perry and with Mrs. Lloyd King, a close friend, presented Lil. with a bedroom reading lamp and four place settings of dishes in appreciation for her friendship, loyalty and co- operation while she had lived on the Island for many years prior to selling her home last summer to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Anderson and three children. We shall be pleased to welcome her back among us at any time. Fliers and ads are being sent out concerning the "Pioneer Days" Opening of the Scugog Shores Museum on the Island on Saturday, and Sunday May 19, and 20th. We have been told it is illegal to advertise the name of the lady who will be present for the opening ceremony, so guess you'll have to come and see for yourself. Starting next week you will be made aware of a National week for Retardation when seeds will be sent out for Flowers of Hope. Please don't ignore the request for your interest and help. Discipline of child Jack Gardner, a consul- tant with the Durham Board of Education will speak on the topic 'Discipline: A Personal Point of View'. The presentation and discus- sion period will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the library of Cart- wright Public School on Tuesday, May 15. The discussion will be the fourth in the very successful parent education series being sponsored by the Blackstock Nursery School in honour of the Interna- tional Year of the Child. Admission is free, refresh- ments will be served and all parents are encouraged to hear this dynamic speaker. _ PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 9, 1979 Ziebart " Genuine Ziebart Process 985-8631 Why not make your car sparkle?
