The Devils opened the scoring in the first few mip- utes of play with a goal by Mark Kendall. There wefe no more goals scored in the first half but lots of good offensive and defensive -soc- cer was played by both teams. In the second half, Devils James "Cawker and Andy Systma scored two nice goals. This was followed with a goal from Devil John Harman on an excellent pass from Douglas Arculus. James Cawker scored anoth- er goal making the score 5-0 and giving goal keeper Brad Puckrin his first official shut out of the season. The Dough Boys have to be congratulated for some ex- cellent goal tending and good defensive soccer. Scugog Youth Soccer Club Mini Soccer Blue team - 6 Orange Team - 0 The Blue Team took com- mand of the ball right from the beginning and despite a gallant effort of the orange team the blue team did not give way. Goals for the blue team were scored as follows: Blair Beacock -4, Brian Appleby -1, Ryan LaRocca -1. White Team - 2 Purple J¢2m- 0 The White Team took an early lead but did not get things all their own way. The purple team had a few close misses at goal but just couldn't seem to be able to get them in. Goals for the White team were scored by William McCullough Jr. and Brett Puckrin. Scugog Youth Soccer Club Squirt Bigglestone Orange Bomb- ers played Port Perry Chry- sler Arrows. First goal scored by Michael Kersten for the Arrows. Player Daryl Leatherdale scored a goal for the Orange Bomb- ers. Second goal for the Arrows was scored by Chris Logan assisted by Jeff Mills. Arrows player, Dave Wood scored the third gqal for the Arrows. Mike Kersten fin- ished the game with another goal for the Arrows. Making it four to one for the Arrows. Drapeau Cartage Selects played home against the Canadian Tire Whippets. Select Dave Irvine scored the first goal of the game unassisted. Whippet Jamie Henshilwood soon tied things up with his second goal of the game. Whippet Joey Jack- man slid one by the goalie tying things up once again until David Irvine breaks this with a terrific pass from Ted Ferguson. Whippet Jamie Henshilwood ties things up again with his next goal assisted by John Caw- ker. Jamie then scored the tie breaking goal which was followed up with another Whippet goal by Joey Jack- man. Both teams came back in full force with David Irvine scoring the next goal. The next goal for Scugog Selects resulted from a penalty shot by David Schwan. Stephen McTavish assisted David Irvine with the next goal and David Irvine in the final and very important goal which ended the game with a well struggled over 7-7 tie. Super game kids - you all hung in there and made it such an exciting and entertaining game. Scugog Youth Soccer Club Pee Wee On Friday June 15, Scugog A Port Perry Lions played their second game at home against the Oshawa Spart-. ans. Scugog held off the Spart- ans until the last few minutes of the first half, then John Kelly of the Spartans scored, giving the Oshawa team a 1-0 lead. Early in the second half John Kelly scored again. It was a well played game by both teams. Scugog did not allow any more goals and played a good defensive game. Final score 2-0 for the Spartans. P.S. students win awards in Interschool competition by Danny Millar Students from the two local public schools com- peted in the finals of the Durham Elementary Athletic Association on Thursday, June 7, at the Civic Fields in Oshawa. The girls team from RH Cornish brought back the lions share of the awards as they cap- tured two first place ribbons, five seconds, and six thirds. The boys squad did not enjoy success in the same volume but the greatest highlight belonged to them. Mike Luchka broke a record in the boys under nine cate- gory when he jumped 3.78 meters in the long jump. The 'boys team also netted a second and a third place finish in other categories. The girls team coach Darla Thomas called their success "Excellent." She had special praise for a few of her athletes including Cindy Blohm who came within .2 seconds of winning the 80 meter hurdles, and according to the coach she '"came very close to the record in 400 meters. Also wining accolades from the coach was long jumper Barb Markovic who won that event with a 4.58 meters leap in the under 13 class. RH Cornish must have a special touch for turning out long jumpers because a third, young Cecilia William- son won three trophies for outstanding performances, one of them in the long jump with a hop of 3.06 meters. The winners from Port Perry in the final Durham meet were: Cindy Blohm in the 80 meter sprint, Luchka and Markovic. Second placements went to Judy Brinkman, Kelly West, Cindy Blohm, Teresa McKenzie, David Fulford. Kelly West ended up in second in two events - the 1500 meters and 800 meters. Third place finishers from RH Cornish include Jennifer Fedyk, Rhonda Pettinger, Terry Trimble, Jackie Abraham, Mark Phillips, Lisa Edgar, Karen Tom- chison, and Cindy Heurkens. The girls under 14 relay team finished second with a time of 56 seconds. Denise Crawford scored the first run on the game in the first inning, going home on a Joan Wilton hit. Another Port Perry run was added in the sixth inning when Joan Wilton scored on Janie Thornton's single into shall- ow left field. . With Port Perry up two to nothing in the top of the seventh, Mount Albert came out swinging and capitaliz- ing dn Port errors managed to gain themselves three runs before being retired. On the first pitch of the Port Half of the seventh Carol Wilton slammed a hit into deep centre field and rounded the bases to tie the game. It was Carol's sixth home run of the season and it salvaged one point for the squad as they were shut out for the remainder of the game. Janie Thornton pitched the entire game, striking out eight batters and with three safe hits in three at bats, she was picked the star of the game.
