Port Perry grabbed a one to nothing lead in the first inning and notched one more run in the second with Lynn Cook hitting her first home run of the year. However, in their next two at-bats, the Ux- bridge team managed to send six players around the bases, so when Port came to bat in the bottom of the fourth, Uxbridge had a four run lead. This lead was short lived, though, as the Port team again started hitting, managing to score nine runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning. The Uxbridge Ladies kept trying and in the seventh inning loaded the bases but were unable to send anybody home and the game ended with a 14-6 score in Port's favour. Karen Young worked the first four innings on the mound and struck out seven batters, with Janie Thornton adding a couple more strikeouts in the three innings she worked. For the second game in a row, Val Sweetman was chosen the Star of the Game. The Ladies most satisfying win of the season to date 1976 Maverick Lic. LDS334. The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Joan Wilton was sent home on Lynn Cook's double and Lynn scored herself when the next batter, Carol Wilton banged out a single over the second base. Claremont staged a rally in their half of the fifth but the Port Perry girls © win four straight allowed them only one run. In the sixth inning Port scored twice more with Kim Neill and Carol Bond cross- ing the plate on a double pounded out by Joan Wilton. The Claremont girls scored again in the bottom of the sixth but the Port Perry girls held on and the game ended with a 4-2 score. And many of us nurture a secret desire to be doers, not just watchers. It's so easy today to "get into sailing." For first-time buyers, there is a great assortment of sailboats, from the ever-popular sail- boards to fleet-footed catamarans to small tradi- tional sailing dinghies, all priced well within the means of fun-loving Canadians. He was able to make you want to put forth your best effort. He took time out to teach me about things, especially human be- haviour. He was very sup- portive, he encouraged." One major event that Mr. MacDonald allowed Mr. Dekker to handle each year were the commencement ex- ercises. This principal retir- ed in 1973 and his retirement party was handled by Mr. Dekker. And once you get a taste of sailing, you'll soon want to move up to something larger. If you'd rather learn some- thing about the art of sailing, before going out to purchase your first sailboat, here are some suggestions from Allied Boating Association of Canada that will help you. There are sailing schools in most on-the-water communities in Canada. He supported and encouraged all the sporting endeavours I've been involved in. I think the administration of this school has a healthy respect for what it (sports) can do for people." Mr. Arculus, another popu- lar teacher, calls it a "'privi- lege' to have worked with the man this season. "I've learned an awful lot working with Mr. Dekker for a year. After you have success- fully completed the basic course, look for opportuni- ties to crew on other boats to gain experience and con- fidence. Many sailing schools offer "graduate" programs which include boat trips and the opportunity to crew in club regattas. And don't forget that sailing can be a great family affair. If you're married and have children, give your wife and kids the chance to get the "sailing bug". Finally, - how does Mr. Dekker think he'll be re- membered in Port Perry. He quotes somebody famous. "A man's stature is deter- mined by what he does with what he has', I hope that in some people's eyes they can understand what I mean by that." "I consider myself a very lucky individual because I've been associated with some very great people who've influenced my life for the better." He believes he is a man who has done all he can with all he has. He probably is that. Brock High School will love him.
