250 marchers participate in annual Minor Softball Parade by Danny Millar The Port Perry Minor Softball Association wrapped up Minor Softball Week with a successful parade and three ball games ah . <r at Joe Fowler Park on Saturday, June 23rd. The parade, which lasted about fifteen minutes, started at the Port Perry High School and finished at Candy Stevenson gets set to hit official pitch tossed in by Mayor Jerry Taylor while catcher Billy Kane waits for the strike. wn AS the ball park. At the head of the parade was Mayor Jerry Taylor, dressed for the occasion, wearing a baseball glove. J His Honour was followed by the young athletes, from the very youngest T-Ball players to the Bantams, and Association Secretary Vin Walker later estimated that there were 'around 250" marchers. Mr. Walker and the Executives have done a superb job in organizing this year's festivities. He later wished that he could have obtained a band for the march. When the last of the marchers arrived at the park they lined up along the outfield grass line and" waited for Mr. Taylor to give his speech. In his adress he thanked the sponsors of the teams, the volunteers, and the Police and Fire Depart- ments. Mr. Walker also praised the later, saying "the Fire Department was a big help." The Mayor threw out the first ball (He's a righty) to young Candy Stephenson of the PeeWee girls. She swung on and missed the first two pitches and hit the third. The pitches were caught Ly Billy Kane. After Miss Stephen- son finished her duties she left the diamond with a big smile, something that was as noticeable as their uniforms on a lot of youngsters, all day. Two T-Ball games preceded the main event. In the first Philp Pontiac Buick met Mini Cinema and the second pitted the Girls Squirt teams from Gord Lewis and Larry's Garage against each other. The last contest on the card was a nine inning Lob Ball game between the Executives and the Fire Department. The Execs pulled off a 33-12 triumph. The game was filled with humorous antics, many of "which were supplied by Executives third baseman Paul Cooper and catcher Ken White who became involved in several argu- ments with umpire Bob Jamieson. Fireman pitcher Dave Ballingal also supplied many laughs for his team. Later in the evening a draw was held for a tele- vision set which was won by Eva Brown of Brooklin. It had to be, for all who braved the nasty weather, one of the most enjoyable evenings spent at the ball park this season. 'It went pretty well," said Mr. Walker. Seniors drop five consecutive games by Danny Millar After starting the Lake Scugog Softball season with a winning streak, the Port Perry entry from Canadian Tire has really cooled off. The first three Pontypool hitters got on base and eventually scored off right- hander Kevin Walker, who went the full route and was tagged with the loss. After the precarious start Walker settled down to strike out 13 Generals. Kelly Neals, the Pontypool ace righty, allowed just five Port hits while forcing 17 men to go down on strikes. Doug Scott managed two hits off Neals, the only man to do so. Mark Lee, Ron Redman, and Mike Healy had the other base hits. The Generals got their runs on seven hits but were aided by five Port errors, including one dropped fly ball in the first inning, which occured with the bases loaded. It is the second win for Pontypool over Port Perry. Two weeks ago they walloped Port 13-0 when the full line-up from Port was not present. In the most recent match between the two, Port Perry showed up with the minimum of nine players, a problem which has been increasing lately for coach Doug Scott. In a game a week and a half ago, Port came with nine players but one, Ron Redman was ejected, causing the team to forfeit. The coach feels that a two week layoff that the team now enjoys may make the athletes who have not been attending the games hungry for action. As for the last Port effort, catcher Don Phinney said "We played well enough to win," but he concluded that the bad breaks hurt his team.
