22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, June 27, 1979 Scugog Youth Soccer Action Scugog A vs Trojans On June 20th Scugog A Team Port Perry Lions play- ed the Oshawa Trojans at the Port Perry High School. At the ten minute mark in the first half, Ken Huggins got the first goal. This seemed to spark the Lions and from there on it was their game. Larry Van Schagen got goal no. 2 and then Ken Huggins got another goal putting the Lions ahead 3-0. The Trojans then got a pen- alty shot, but kicked it way to the side of the Lion's goal. early in the second half the Lions almost scored again when the ball hit the top bar and bounced off. Then Brian Tysick scored the 4th goal for the Lions. The Trojans did not give up but could not get by the Lion's defence. Jerry Jackman played a good game in goal and got his first shut-out. Good work Lions. Keep it up. White team - 4 Orange Team - 0 The game was full of excit- ment with both teams having a lot of near misses at the goal. The White Team got two penalty goals which in- creased their score. The Orange Team had no substi- tutes and got pretty tired by the end. Scorers were: B.J. McCullough no. 2. Penalties by Kevin Puckrin and Ethan Lauereau. Blue Team -5 Purple Team - 0 This game the kids seemed to spread out a bit better and didn't all go for the ball at the same time. The Blue Team are proving to be a strong team with some good goal scorers. The Purple Team tried hard but just couldn't get them into the net. Scorers were: Blair Beacock - 1, Brian Appleby - 2, Ryan Larocca - 2. Scugog Youth Soccer Club Squirt Irvine Const. Wood Chucks-2 Port Perry Chrysler Green Arrows- 1 The Wood Chucks took command of the ball in the first half of the game in spite of the strong defence put up by the Green Arrows. Mid- way through the game Green Arrows Mike Sorley nipped in a neat goal for his team. During the second half the Wood Chucks Dana Forder whipped the ball in the net for a 1-1 tie. Nearing the end of the game Jon David Rod- way scored the winning goal for the Wood Chucks with a super assist by Clayton Hammett. Final score was 2-1 for the Wood Chucks. Both teams played an ex- cellent game and we were pleased to see the referees calling the shots more strict- ly and explaining to the boys the reason for the call. Scugog Youth Soccer Club Atom Colin Ball Motors Mustangs -3 Port Perry Printing Devils -0 Port Perry Printing Devils were beaten 3-0 Thursday night by Colin Ball Motors Mustangs. There was no scoring in the first half but Devils goal keeper Brad Puckrin showed us some excellent goal tending saving two penalty shots and lots of shots on goal from the Mus- tangs. In the second half Mustang Ray Daniels scored the first goal of the evening from a penalty shot. The Devils just could not penetrate the Mus- tangs tight defence line. Then Mustang Sean Fisher scored a second goal for the Mustangs which was follow- ed with a nice goal from Barry Willerton ending the game 3-0. Jaguars defeat Sunbirds 8-0 by Danny Millar The Scugog Jaguars of the Oshawa Soccer Club have a problem. After being outclassed 6-1 by the Oshawa Rangers in their seasoner opener on June 6th, the team decided that they were not competitive enough for the Minor Peewee calibre of play. So they dropped down into the Major Mosquito league, where they are slightly older than the other teams. All the players are 11 or 12. But since moving to the lower level they have walked over the competition. In the first they won 5-0 and the next game saw the Jaguars demolish the Philp Sunbirds 8-0 on Thursday, June 21 at Port Perry. While the Jaguars no doubt would rather play in their division, it seems just as unfair to keep them in the Mosquito division as it was to have them play against PeeWees. However, they will stay in the Mosquito league. In the ambush of the Sunbirds, Ian Porter led the attack with four goals, three in the first half and one in the second. His last marker ended the scoring at the 20:20 mark of the period. Jerry Fowler netted a couple, including the winner and Paul Bateman and Michael Connolly added singles. Connolly was given a yellow card for unsports- manlike conduct midway through the second half marring an otherwise fine evening for the Scugog team. Goaltender Mark Bouw- meester was victimized six times in the first half before giving way at the beginning of the second to Danny Markovic. Bouwmeester rarely got a breather during his stint between the posts as play was in his end constant- ly and he was forced to make several stops. Fowler's first goal came with the contest barely two minutes old when - he emerged from a scramble in front of Bouwmeester, with the black and white sphere and scored. The second goal came on a similar play when Porter was left unguarded in front and deposited the ball into the twine when he got it. The neatest point of the night came on the Jags third goal when Bateman -cul- Legionaires Squirts trounce Unionville by Danny Millar The Port Perry Legion- ove I'm your local Alcan Authorized Dealer. On Thursday, June 21, they pounded Unionville 21-5, in "Unionville. The big fireworks came in a nine run fifth inning for the Legionnaires. Home runs by Ron Brown, the winning pitcher, and Lee Wilbur were the major shots. Brown's came with one man on and Wilbur's occurred with two aboard. Wilbur also drove in several more runs later in the contest. Brown struck out five hitters before giving the ball to Jeff Cockerton who finished the last two innings of the shortened five inning match. Cockerton retired two men on strikes. The game was halted prematurely because of a curfew on the diamond. The ladies' team was entitled to the park and since the Squirts had completed the fifth inning at 8:15 they had to leave. Unionville has a rule stating that no inning may start after 8:10. The Port Perry team has two games next week. On Wednesday, they journey to Stouffville and when they return they play at home Thursday. minated a three-way scoring play with a shot that eluded the beleagured goalkeeper. Bateman is the center forward on the play. The Jaguars have switched schedules since changing leagues and now play on Thursday. They had been playing on Wednesday. Strong Bantams League leader by Danny Millar The Port Perry Bantam Softball team is currently in first place in the York- Durham league with a 6-2 won-loss record. The athletes, age 13-14, are coached by Kevin Walker and managed by Bill Fewer. Port has twice bested Udora, once in the season opener, as well as revenging back-to-back 8-7 losses in their second and third games. Since those losses Port Perry has been undefeated and so far this season have outscored opposition 75-40. they're getting better,' says Fewer, 'they're steadily improving. Fewer feels the strength of the team is the pitching staff - comprised of Donnie Young, Pete Christie, and Phil Robinson and the infield. Young is the short "I think" relief man who comes in to pitch when the starters get in a jam. The strength of the pitchers is not surprising since their coach is the best hurler in-Port Perry. - "Our pitching staff's been good," says the manager when asked for the strong points on the squad. Young and Sean Fewer are leading the team in hitting giving the Bantams "A well balanced team." If the pitchers, hitters, and infielders are as good as the manager believes they are then a first place finish is possible. "I think they can stay there," he says of the lofty perch they now rest on." The Bantams play their home games Monday night at 8:30 p.m. They have a tournament in Lindsay on July 14th which may feature some tough opposition for this team. lo ol lop lop op op op op op Ld CaCI C CCH 5E52525252525¢2 52525252525252528525252525¢5252525¢52585 255 5 5 A000 DAOOOOOOOOOOOC W fy BRAKE JOB INCLUDES: included in special price. disc pads * Inspect disc calipers (if applicable) ¢ Inspect front grease seals (if applicable) Price:- 2 wheels Drums TEXACO) Jf Disc or Drum Brakes - two wheels e Resurface drums/disc rotors ¢ Repack front outer wheel bearings $4595 SHOCK ABSORBERS SHOCK ABSORBER DEAL INCLUDES: Supply and install 1 pair shock absorbers - original equipment equivalent. *Check springs, suspension and steering connections.
