For CHUM, it was the rubber match win in the three game series which started in 1977. They won the: inaugeral contest but lost last year's event. The game, as per usual, was full of laughs, the majority of which were sup- plied by CHUM Sports Direc- tor Brian Henderson. Hen- derson was the biggest man on the diamond and he made his presence felt. On one play, after a Super- star outfielder had made a bad throw that nearly ended up in the CHUM bench, Henderson bellowed to the culprit, "Hey Chicorli, the plate's over here,"'he mo- tions to the spot from his first base position, "not in Scar- borough." At another point in the match Henderson attempted to use his awsome size to prevent Clive Boyd from reaching first after he had walked. "If you think you get this damn base you go ahead," yelled the sports- caster. He soon moved out of the way with a big smile, something which a lot of people wore like an article of clothing that evening. The Stars went through four pitchers. They started with Rick Jones, then went to the big man, on to Mike Holland, and then back to Jones. With a number of runs time, when Hobson was scheduled to bat, Henderson joined him at the plate bat- ting lefthanded. It worked out well because Hobson hits right. The problem came when the ball was it and they couldn't decide who would run. Hobson pointed to his teammate but the big man just returned to the bench. After the game the CHUM team was given a trophy b Chief Jack Cooke. The hard- ware was inscribed,' Annual Challenge Trophy of Base- ball Prowess in aid of Muscular Dystrophy." Do the radio personalities really enjoy coming out to the games. "Oh...Love it," Henderson bellows, his face breaking into a grin that makes you believe it. The team plays 32 games this summer and a lot of them are on Saturdays so they must like it, he points out. He also noted that they get about 22 people from the station to play and that each pays for his own uniform, further evidence, he states, of their love for the game. The best thing about the games, according to Hender- son is "Meeting the people. They invite us back each year so they must enjoy it." Apparently CHUM enjoy- ed the town of Port Perry so much that they arrived two hours early and stayed on the beach beside the ball park. "We had a great time in Port Perry," Henderson concludes, "It's such a Sa at ' NN PTE INR (het < ELAR EIT A CHUM batter-safe at first. who the winning pitcher was. 25 beautiful setting." scored it is hard to figure out But then, who really cares? The ironic fact about the game is that one CHUM player, catcher Sandy Hob- son, appears to be a really talented ball player. He was the team's receiver last year as well, and in this game he made a couple of fine plays that may have saved some runs. The Ordinary Superstars took the lead with seven runs in the first and except for a couple of the middle innings, held it all the way. The firemen's biggest frame was the third when they counted seven runs. Dave Ballingal handled the pitching chores for the Firemen. As 'expected he played foil to a lot of antics of the zany Henderson.
