MINI Blue Team -5 Orange Team - 0 Thursday night was anoth- er successful night for the Blue Team. They dominated the game from the begin- ning. The Orange Team had a couple of breakthroughs but couldn't accomplish any- thing. Brian Appleby scored three goals and Ryan La- rocca scored two. No penal- ties were given. Purple Team - 3 White Team - 0 A disastrous night for the White Team but a great night for the Purple. White defencemen just didn't seem to be able to stop the Purple men. Had it not been for a few great saves by Ian Smith the score could have been a lot worse. Confusion seemed to be right in the White Team who were missing one of their prominent players. " Goals were scored by Sean Bradbury, Ryan Free and Cole Parry. A good game Purple Team. squirts Canadian Tire Whippets - 5 Irvine Const. Woodchucks. -2 An early goal by Jamie Henshilwood set the pace for a Whippet's dominated first half. John Cawker, on the PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, July 11, 1979 -- 21 gog Youth Soccer Whippet's right wing, was causing even the determined Woodchucks defence lots of trouble. His cross gave Joey Jackman the Whippets sec- ond goal and John himself then scored from the penalty spot. Another Henshilwood goal made the halftime score 4-0. However, a recharged Woodchuck team emerged in the second half and kept most of the play in the Whippets half. Rob Ryan claimed one back and then Clair Cornish, after some determined running, was presented with a penalty. He made no mistake from the spot. Towards the end of the game, the Whippets regain- ed the initiative and Jamie "The Boot" Henshilwood got one more goal for his Hat- trick. Seniors drop Nestleton in close game by Danny Millar The Port Perry Canadian Tire Senior softball team snapped a five game losing streak and evened their league record at six wins and a like number of losses with an 11-10 victory over Nestle- ton. It is the second win for Port Perry over Nestleton this year and both have come on one run decisions.' The game, played on Wed- nesday, July 4, in Port Perry was a rather entertaining one despite the weak pitch- ing from both sides and a lack of standout defensive plays. Phil Cochrane made his season debut on the rubber for Port Perry and was not sharp. Cochrane allowed 13 hits on the ten runs but struck out eight. After the game Port Perry player-coach Doug Scott stated that Cochrane did not fit into his pitching rotation of Jeff Boyce and Kevin Walker. He said he would be used as a "third pitcher". One of the reasons for Cochrane taking to the mound was the fact that regular pitcher Walker was injured in an industrial accident. He is suffering from torn ligaments in his leg. Cochrane started well, retiring Nestleton in order on eight pitches in the opening inning, and blanked them for the next two frames. He was touched for nine runs in the middle innings when he seemed to tire. On the other hand, the Port Perry bats got to Nestleton righthander Dick Campbell early. They scored four runs in the first. Dean Beare led off the bottom of the first when he reached base on second sacker Gerry Ravensdale's error. Cochrane followed with a single over shortstop Randy McLeod's head and then both scored on Scott's triple off the fence in right- center. The hosts added two more runs when Ron Redman delivered Scott on an infield single and then Redman counted himself on a single by Jim Geer. In the fifth frame Coch- rane changed his delivery from a regular whip motion to a high speed slingshot delivery. It was not effective as Nestleton had their biggest inning off the right- hander. Assingle by Randy McLeod drove in two runs and then George Wilson delivered a couple more on a sharply hit ball to Beare that went for an error. Moments later Wilson scored. Cochrane went back to the more orthadox motion after the barrage ended. The shootout continued until Port Perry brought two runners across home plate, one of them with the winning run in the eighth. Dan McKee, who replaced Scott at the hot corner, singled and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Bill Owen stroked a single down the middle to score him. Owen sacrificed two bases by Bill St. John and then motored home on a wild pitch. The game marked the return of two players suffer- ing from ailments. Rob Evans came back at short- stop. He is plagued with chronic shoulder problems. Doug Christie, recuperating from back surgery, played at first base. "It was good to see Doug Christie playing his first game after a back injury," noted the Port coach.
