Several local politicians and executives from General Motors in Oshawa were on hand for the ceremonies that began a two-day Open House which saw over 1000 people drop in for a look at the impressive show-room and service facilities. For owner, Bryce Philp, the official opening marked the culmination of his career in the automobile bysiness that began 31 years ago with a G.M. dealership in Stirling, Ontario, near Belleville. Mr. Philp started as a car-jockey, worked in the parts room, moved into new and used car sales and man- agement, and eventually wound up owning 49 per cent of the dealership in Stirling. When the chance to buy the Zering Pontiac-Buick dealer- ship came up, Mr. Philip moved to Port Perry and took over the business on Water Street. That was on July 1, 1976, and almost three years to the day later, he proudly cut the red ribbon to officially open the new premises which feat- ures 2400 square feet of indoor showroom space, sev- eral offices, and a service area with eight full bays. Mr. Philp said later that fficially open building the decision to move to the new premises was prompted by several factors: the need for more space for display and expanded service facili- ties; agd the fact that the Oshawa Road location is a busy highway, and in itself an excellent location for an automobile dealership. Obviously, a major re- location and expansion such as this is not without risk, but Mr. Philp expressed confi- dence in both the future and potential of business in the Port Perry-Scugog area. His new-car sales figures for the past three years in Port Perry back up that confidence. When he first opened on Water Street three years ago this month, he set a target for 100 new car sales during the last half of that year. He reached that target by 11 cars. The next year, sales climbed to 350 new units; in 1978, over 400. And this year his target is the sale of over 500 new units. Situated on 2.2 acres of land, the building design was worked out with officials from G.M. and executives from the company had high words of praise when they attended the official opening last Friday morning. In talking about his busi- ness, Mr. Philp paid special tribute to his staff, "saying they are the ones who have helped build any success I have." Irwin Smith Music Ltd.
