by Danny Millar At first glance at a 31-3 score in a Port Perry victory over East Gwillimbury a natural reaction would be to ask "who scored the Port touchdowns and who kicked the East Gwillimbury field goal? # However, on closer intro- spection one discovers that the score is from a softball game played between Squirts at Port Perry on Thursday, July 5. To state the obvious East Gwillimbury (presumably across a river from West Gwillimbury) was outclas- sed. Port jumped on every SAYA) BAS veh TR FE SERS AA FORT NY pitcher that threw against them, four in all, until the visiting team's coach almost had to ask for volunteers to throw the oversized golf ball -like sphere. Port Perry counted seven runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings and yet not one home run was hit in the game. The hurlers that Port Perry disposed of, in chronologic order, were Dave Pegg, who was pegged (no pun inten- ded) with the loss, Glen Cole, Philip Nicholls, and Larry Farr, all righthanders. The Gwillimbury quartet combined to strike out four Legionnaires, a figure that adhd nin snd was matched by the duo of Jeff Cockerton and Ron Brown, 'who as usual, split the chucking chores in half. The half game pitching schedule has been followed all through the season by the Port Perry coaches. Jeff Norton has also been summoned for mound duties. There was some slight questioning of the game called by the home -plate umpire. He called a lot of low ball strikes which the hitters felt had missed the strike zone. One reason for this may have been the fact that he was kneeling right on the ground and so may have had a very close view of the low pitches. With the umpire in that position one would expect a lot of high pitches to be called balls but this did not seem to be the case. The day before the drub- bing the Legionnaires were not quite as hot with the lumber as they defeated Bradford by a slim 14-2 margin. Centerfielder Lee Wilbur paced the attack with three home runs. Wilbur leads the team in circuit clouts.- He is also a fine defensive flyhawk and as such rates as one of the best players on the unit. Port counted runs in every one of the seven innings, including Wilbur's leadoff homer in the sixth. Cockerton won this pitch- ing match up against Jack- son. Eleven Bradford batters fanned while eight Port men either looked at or swung on a third strike. -OBITUARY - (From Page 21) of Burkton; and seven grandchildren.
