18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, July 18, 1979 Willowdale captures Midget tournament by Danny Millar Willowdale Northminster United captured the 4th Annual Port Perry Midget Softball Tournament when they eked out an exciting 2-1 victory over Alderwood Sunday evening at the Lakefront Park. Willowdale had forced the final game of this two-day tournament by winning an equally exciting 1-0 victory over the same Alderwood team. Both games provided fans with some very crowd- pleasing softball, and capped a highly successful tour- nament which saw 14 teams competing, one from as far away as Kirkland Lake. Going into the final it was a real 'pick-em' match. Both teams had earlier defeated Binbrook by identical 4-2 margins and both had been equally impressive in these feats. The only evidence for predicting the outcome was Alderwood's previous 4-0 victory over Willowdale on Saturday. As it turned out, that win was totally im- material. Willowdale advanced to the final mainly on strength of their defence. Their inner defence was nearly flawless and the outfield boasted the best throwing arms in the whole tournament. Alderwood had made it to the last game on the strength of their pitching, mainly from Mike McMarten. Nagy for Willowdale and Richard Cowlaman for Alderwood, battled seven full innings in a tremendous pitching duel. Nagy won out Alderwood runner was cut down at second base and expressions on the faces of the players tell the story. Action took place on Sunday afternoon between Alderwood and Binbrook during the 1-0 by pitching a two hitter. His counterpart allowed four hits. Perhaps Alderwood was a little fortunate that they kept the score so close because Willowdale had left ten men on base. The run that Cowlaman allowed was unearned, thanks to a throwing error by his shortstop. In addition, the runner who eventually scored reached first base on a dropped third strike. The run came in the top of the first. Alderwood wasted a glorious opportunity to knot the score when their leadoff hitter made it safely to third SAVE YOUR OLD WINTARIO TICKETS FOR SAVINGS May 1to September 30, 1979 Canadian records and Se, $3.95 and at least save up to $2.00 on tapes costing at least % 50% on admissions to Canadian ® movies. It was here that the tough Northminster United defence came to the fore. With the infield drawn in to choke off the run, Nagy forced opposition batsmen to pop up twice to the infield and he struck out one man. One of the key players in the Willowdale defence was second baseman Brian McKee. He made several sharp stabs at line drives and ground balls and was excellent at tagging out runners attempting to steal. He also came up with a key hit in the game. Willowdale threatened to add to their lead in the fifth frame when they loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batsman. It was one of a few times tha} Cowlaman appeared to be in trouble. Fortunately for Alderwood partisans, and there were many, he escaped un- scathed. The score never varied from 1-0 for the remainder of the match as Northminster held on to force the deciding match. FINAL The second game matched a pair of flame throwing righthanders in Nagy and McMarten and the result was a thrilling 2-1 win for Willowdale. Nagy got relief help from Dave Ryan in the 6th inning. Alderwood drew first blood with their lone run in the bottom of the fourth frame. A leadoff single by Mike Car and a bunt single by Gord Brassett put runners on first and second. A wild pitch by Nagy put them bath in this point that the Alderwood coach used some clever strategy. He put in a pinch runner for the lead-footed Car and when Phil Policelli flied to- right he beat the throw by a couple of feet. When the excellent throwing of the Willowdale outfield and the slowness of Car are considered, the move seems all the more intelligent. Duane Bowman literally stole a run in the next half inning when Willowdale tied the contest. He made it to first, swiped two bases, and then scored on a passed ball. STORYBOOK ENDING The scoreboard flashed a few more zeros until it reached the top of the seventh and final inning. A storybook ending could not have been more dramatic.
