Colleen Fremlin from Algoma will be visiting and staying with the family of John Carnaghan, Black- stock. Donavon Wilson from Manitoulin Island will be hosted by the Ben DeJong family of Nestleton. Dan Grenier from Nipissing will be staying at the farm of Glenn Larmer, Blackstock. Luc Girroux from Sudbury will be hosted by Gary Meadows family, Port Hope. While in Durham, these 4-H members will be participa- ting in activities on a County basis. We are pleased to have them in the County and trust that their stay will be educational as well as be a very enjoyable experience for them. : Trouble Shooting in the Field Many farmers wonder what causes low growing spots in the fields. Soil analysis may help farmers get to the root of these problem spots. Soil & Crop Specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agri- culture and Food suggest that while you are working in the field you should take notes of the spots that are not growing as well as the rest of the crop, then take a soil sample from the poor spot and one from a neighbouring good area for comparison. Soil analysis doesn't always provide the answer, but it frequently does. Three main soil related causes for poor spots in fields are low soil pH (acidity, erosion, and lack of drainage.) Low pH is the most common cause of poor spots in Southern Ontario, Southwestern Ontario and erosion banks a close second. Low pH appears as a yel- lowish-green or purplish spots in corn fields. Corn plants past the five to sixth leaf stage show magnesium deficiency. These low pH spots usually remain un- detected because the farmer didn't conduct a soil test. In other cases, soil samples were taken across the field and mixed so that the poor soil didn't show in the analy- sis. Zinc deficiency if prevalent in corn in eroded spots, but it shows up rarely in other crops. This deficiency appears as broad-white or yellowish-green bands on the leaves below the whorl. Poor drainage cannot be detected by soil analysis, but it can be detected by observation. The crop usually grows slowly and has an overall yellowish-green appearance. Drainage problems can be diagnosed through plant analysis. Plant samples should be taken at the first sign of reduced growth. if the soil is not the cause of your low growing area, you should watch the field close- ly for insects and plant diseases whicii may cause symptoms similar to nut- rient dificiencies. Service of ordination The Presbytery of Lindsay and Peterborough held a 'service of Ordination for Miss Dorothy Bulmer, Deaconess of the Nestleton and Sonya charge, in St. Andrew's Church, Sonya, Ontario on Friday June 15, at 8 p.m. The Organ prelude and the Presbytery entered. The opening Hymn and Prayer concluded, the Clerk of Presbytery - - Rev. Stuart McEntyre read the narration of the steps and declaration of Intent. The Scripture lessons included Psalm 95 - and portions of the 4th chapter 2nd Corinthians and 16th chapter of St. John were read by Rev. Wm. Fairly, moderator of Peterborough, Lindsay Presbytery. The Rev. Roy Gellatly chose "Ourselves Your Servants' as topic for the sermon. The choir selection was "I asked the Lord." Rev McEntyre continued with the Ordination. The Prayer and declaration, the giving of the right hand of Fellowship by the members of the Presbytery, the sign- ing of the formula, the gowning of the Ordinand and the charge to the new Pres- bytery. The closing Hymn, "Praise my soul the King of Heaven", and Rev. Miss Dorothy Bulnaer pronounced the Benediction. The recept.on was held in the Church Hall following the service. Refreshments were served and gifts presented. Rev. Bulmer was the reci- pient of several gifts - a lovely gow from her parents, a preaching scarf from the Mestleton and Sonya cong-egations, a silver Tea service from Sonya Young People and other gifts.
