[See story on page seven]. cr Te Ep TR It's Western Weeken It will be something old and something new at Port Perry's annual Western Weekend which kicks off on Thursday, August 9. The four day extravaganza celebrates its ninth anniver- sary this year, and Western Weekend is becoming some- thing of a local tradition during the early part of August. Organized and sponsored by the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, Western Week- end should offer something for just about everyone. As in years past, much of the activity is centred on Port Perry's Queen Street, which will be closed to traffic from Perry to Water Streets. Along with numerous booths offering everything from hot dogs to games of chance, Queen Street merchants will be holding sidewalk sales. Back again this year is the always popular Super Star contest. It will get underway in front of the Post Office at 3:00 P.M. Friday, August 10, and spectators will have a chance to see members of Scugog council and others compete in such zany events as watermelon seed spitting, cream pie eating and egg tossing. One new wrinkle this year is an antique show and sale at the old Arena on Water Street, and organizers say that there will be several antique cars on display courtesy of the Craven Foundation. An added feature to watch for is a demonstration of water ski-kite flying by members of the Rice Lake Ski Club, and that gets underway Saturday, August 11, at 4:30 P.M. at the Port Perry waterfront. As always, there will be lots of action for the young- sters, with a midway in Palmer running for the full four days of the Weekend. In past years, the Mutt Show sponsored by the Kinette Club has proved very popular with young and old alike, and your favourite pooch will be doing his thing in front of the Post Office Saturday afternoon at 1:00 P.M. For those who feel like Bowling Club wants to locate ON waterfront The Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club is prepared to re-locate from its present green on Queen Street, if the Club gets financial help from the Township to construct a new green and club-house on municipal property on the lakefront. Club representatives Tom Harris and Grace Love told council Monday night that the 22 members want to re-locate from the present location, which Mrs. Love described as mosquito- infested, and not of the proper regulation length to allow official bowling competitions. Mr. Harris said the desire by the club members to re-locate is not a new idea, but the official request is being made at this time because of the recent suggestions to expand the Scugog Library onto the bowling green property rather than construct a new library building on a parcel of lakefront property pur- chased this spring by the Township. Mr. Harris at one point during the presentation to council said the lakefront property should be retained for recreation use, and "it would be an ideal location for a new bowling green." "I don't thing any public buildings should be erected on that piece of land," he said. While council took no action Monday night on the request, the response was luke-warm, mainly because it would cost an estimated $100,000 to construct a new bowling green and club- house with proper fencing and lights. Councillor Reg Rose point- ed out that much of the public opposition to a recent proposal to build a new library on the waterfront site was centred around spend- ing Township money, and he suggested there could be the same opposition to spending public money for a new bowling green and club- house. Also, he sated that the Township has made a commitment to offer part of that land on the lakefront for a new library building, and (Turn to page 9) 800 Ib. safe too much for thieves An 800-pound safe proved a little too much to handle for thieves who broke into the XL Service Centre at the corner of Union Avenue and Highway 7A in Port Perry. A spokesman for Durham Region Police said that thieves smashed a window at the rear of the gas station early Monday morning, and then apparently dragged the floor safe through the front door to the parking lot. A nearby resident heard noises and called police shortly after 3:00 a.m. The safe was found abandoned in the parking lot. The police spokesman said there appeared to be at- tempts to open the door of the safe, but a considerable amount of cash remained secure inside. CAMERA STOLEN While thieves were not able to get at the cash in the XL safe, a Brooklin man was the victim of a theft Sunday afternoon when somebody pocketed his camera valued at $1300. Durham police say the man docked his boat at the pier on the Port Perry water- front for about ten minutes and when he returned, the 35 mm Canon camera with a 400 mm telephoto zoom lens was missing from the dash- board of the boat. time again working off a little energy, the Legion this year is spon- soring a tug-o-war in Palmer Park, and challenges have been issued to a number of groups and organizations for this event which should provide a few laughs for the crowds. And as usual there will be lots of music for dancing at the New Arena Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and a street dance in front of the Post Office Saturday evening. For the teenagers (under 19) the Latcham Centre will be the place to go Friday evening to work out the latest disco steps. One of the events to wrap up the four-day affair is the Jr. Farmer tractor pull at Port Perry Fairgrounds Sunday afternoon. This is just a partial list of events and activities for Western Weekend 1979. Watch for an ad in this paper, and for posters on display throughout Scugog Township.
