To win his home Grand Prix, Duhamel will come out of retirement to race at Mosport, July 27, 28 and 29 in the Molson Export Motor- cycle Grand Prix of Canada. Thirty-nine year old Duhamel of Ville La Salle, Quebec, has hung up his helmet and racing leathers on three previous occasions and twice before he has changed his decision to retire when offered a chance to win Canada's Grand Prix. In 1977 he placed second and last year was third, both times riding for Kawasaki. He hopes that this year, his third try will satisfy his ambition to win the Formula 750 World Championship motorcycle classic. Duhamel's chances of a win are the best he's ever had for his mount in the Grand Prix will be a factory- backed Yamaha entered by Yamaha Motor Canada and prepared by one of the world's finest cycle tuners, Bob Work. The machine, one of only five OW-31 Yamahas built for the world champion- ship circuit, is the one ridden by former Canadian and World Champion Steve Baker who suddenly announ- ced his retirement three weeks ago as a result of a serious racing accident earlier this year. Duhamel on a Work-tuned Yamaha turns the . clock back a decade to the late sixties when the two Cana- dians were a formidable team on the racing circuits. Then Duhamel left Yamaha for Kawasaki in 1971 and Work picked up a promising teenager named Steve Baker and the rest is history. Commenting on the reunion for one last chance at glory, Work said "It's good to be working with Yvon again." Then almost wistfully he adds "If Yvon had stayed with us, he'd have been world champion." Duhamel had gone through a series of fabulous but frustrating times with Work and Yamaha and the offer of a factory Kawasaki ride was better financially and it seemed as if the machinery might be better too. In their halcyon days of 1969, Duhamel riding for Work and Yamaha won every professional American Motorcyclist Association 250 cc class National Road Race on the calendar, a total of seven wins including the famed Daytona for the second year in a row. In that same year, Duhamel also rode in the 500 cc class on a 350 cc Yamaha. In spite of a 150 cc handicap Duhamel led Racquet sports cause eye injuries The increased popularity of racquet sports has resul- ted in a surge of eye injuries from both the racquets them- selves and the small, fast moving projectiles used in the game, according to the Section on Ophthalmology of the Ontario Medical Associa- tion. The Section is com- posed of physicians and surgeons who specialize in eye care. Among the more popular racquet sports are tennis, squash, handball, paddle ball and racquet ball. In eye accidents involving these sports, permanent damage or even blindness can be prevented by immediate first aid, says Dr. Marvin Cooper, Information Com- mittee Chairman of the O.M.A. Section. He warns that even the simple "black eye" can be a sign of under- lying ocular damage and should be evaluated by a physician. If the pupil is dilated or irregular following such an injury, the victim should have an immediate ophthalmological evalua- tion. Any cuts around the lids fall into the same cate- gory. Whenever an eyeball is cut or pieces of metal or wood are believed to be in the eye, the best procedure is to have patterns and colours BROOKLUIN NEWMARKET PO Box 370 PO Box 114 Hwy 12 Yonge Street LoB 1Co L3Y 4W3 14161 655-3311 1416) 895-237) Cobl-~stone paving for lasting indoor/outdoor beauty pt ~ ; i: 5 i. With Kawasaki, Duhamel had similar luck as electrify- ing performances and mechanical misfortunes followed him. When Kawa- saki decided to wind down its racing operation Duhamel decided to retire at the end of the 1976 season. At Mosport, Duhamel's biggest threat in the two heat (100 Km. each) Grand Prix will come from a dozen French speaking riders from France, Switzerland and Canada. Another French the victim lie down -- for example, on the back seat of a car -- with his eyes closed, for transport to an emergen- cy room or physician's office. Dr. Cooper says, "Don't bandage the eye tightly or try to force the lids open to determine the extent of the injury, since such manipula- tion may cause further damage to the eye." Small pieces of dirt on the front of the eye can some- times be removed by flush- ing the eye with water, but a physician should usually be consulted. When a cleaning fluid, lye or lime or any chemical comes in contact with the eye, immediate flushing of the eye with any available liquid is critical -- including milk, cola, beer, or whater is around. Best procedure is to hold the eyelid open and flush under tap water for at least five minutes before going to an emergency room or physi- cian's office. "In such sports as tennis, handball, squash, and racquet ball," Dr. Cooper says, "those individuals who wear spectacles should also wear special safety eye guards to protect them against injury. Those who don't normally wear glasses may purchase clear safety glasses with no prescription from many hardware and sporting goods stores and wear them in sports or when doing hobby or yard work whenever there's a chance of flying objects striking the eyes. '"'Contact lens wearers must be particularly careful to protect their lenses against sharp blows and Lions (From Page 21) absence of players who are on vacation. Most notable of the absentees is Scott Patton, a good field, no-hit shortstop. Donnie Young is also on vacation on the East Coast and his departure from the mound will hurt. The team is left with Christie and Robinson, a staff which is, at least, respectable. The key to the Lions strength has been its tough, defensive infield which was held together by Patton, Trembley and back- stop Lovering. The Port entry will be competitive in the playoffs which gets underway July 23 in Port Perry. > EA SEA ~damage when used in H Col - Farms - Commercial - Builders Loans - Dept.
