First defeat since opener Jaguars play short-handed, lose to Bobcats by Danny Millar The Scugog B Jaguars lost their first game since the season opener when they were beaten 4-1 by the Osh- awa Bobcats on Thursday July 26 in Port Perry. The loss marks Scugog's first in the Major Mosquito division of the Oshawa Soccer Club League. Earlier in the year the Jaguars had defeated the same squad 11-1. According to Scugog Coach Barry Page the reason for the turn around was that three of the Jags fastest runners--Mike Connolly, Ian Porter, and Jerry Fowler--were absent. Page also had another rationale. "They picked up a new goalie," he said. The new Oshawa netmind- er is Ed McKenzie and the only goal he allowed was a deflection mid-way through the second half by center forward Paul Bateman. Mc- Kenzie made a few stops, especially early in the last period when it looked as though Scugog would press for a goal. Three of the Cats goals were scored by Paul Herron. His first marker came when he intercepted a pass back to goaltender Tony Kersten and shot it past the startled goalie. Heron's second goal, which turned out to be the winner, was scored on a free kick after he was tripped going in on a breakaway. . Mike Woud and Bob Lamb were standouts for Scugog in the first half, a period of soccer that did not pleasc the Jag's coach. Darrin Bassin netted the final marker of the opening half when he beat Kersten in a scramble in front of the net. This goal was set up by Colin Peart who played a strong game for the Bobcats, At the end of the first half Page told his troops that he was not happy with their play, that because they were three men short they should cluster together for better passes. When they came out for the second session it seemed as though the talk had worked as the Jags pressed the action in Osh- awa's end. Herron got his hat trick goal before Scugog could regroup after an attack when he slipped a chip shot past new goalie Ricky Millenaar. Bateman's deflection later in the match ended the scor- ing as Oshawa walked off the field in what has to be considered a tremendous upset. Was the Scugog mentor Page upset with his unit's play. 'Inthe first half. In the second half not really, they played better in the second half," he replied. The Jaguars are in Osha- wa next week for a return with the Cats. They come back to play in Port Perry on Thursday, August 9. 3 Senior fastball tourney draws I6 competing teanis by Danny Millar Doug Scott, Director of the sixth annual Port Perry senior Softball Tournament has announced that 14 teams have registered for the four day event which begins with four games on Friday, Aug- ust 3.
