Mrs. Gladius Sugget, author of the book, "Roses and Thorns" will be the guest speaker. All ladies are invited to attend. Mrs. Marie Cookman and Mrs. Marian Innis attended a shower for Miss Denise Darnley in Wich Church last Thursday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Art Couves attended the wedding of their niece Marlene Montgomery at Guelph on Saturday. Mr. Bert Finney of Huron Coll- egé, University of Western Ontario, London returned home with them to spend some holidays. Mr. and Mrs. Russel Miller of Pickering visited with her sister Margaret and John Couperthwaijte. - A large crowd enjoyed the euchre at the hall last Friday evening. Lucky players were Reta Cook, Dorothy McDiarmid, Elva Kydd, Bernice Wells, and the gents were William Hill, Phyllis Clark, Mildred Thompson and Doug Stiver. Next euchre will be Sept. 7th. Mr. and Mrs. Roundell spent a couple of days last week holidaying at Ottawa. Mr. Bruce and Alex Cowan of Little Britain visited with Mr. and Mrs. John Couper- thwaite on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Keith Fraser and Mr. and Mrs. Ken Fras- er and Bradley of Port Perry visited on Tuesday with their grandmother Mrs. Florence Hill. Miss Kathy Cookman of St. Catherines and Marie and Chris Cookman and Mike Gibson spent a few days last week camping in Algonquin Park. The afternoon visit of the U.C.W. will meet in the church at 2 p.m. on Wednes- day, September 5th. Glad to report Mrs. Paul Diamond has returned home from the hospital. Mrs. Robert Baird and Mrs. Fred Phoenix visited Mr. and Mrs. Simmons at their cottage at Lake St. Peter a few days last week. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Phoe- nix visited with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brotherston of Cobo- conk and called on Mrs.Lill- ian Westlake of Beaverton on Sunday afternoon. A retired Secondary School teacher and an active senior citizen of some note, Mrs. M. Coulter of Sutton West, Ontario, died at her home on May 30, 1979. Mrs. Coulter was born prior to the turn of the century at Grand Valley, Ontario, the eldest of six children of the late Rev. Canon Edward Appleyard and Mrs. Appleyard. Mrs. Coulter received most of her education in London, Ontario, where she excelled as a student. This was a great accomplish- ment for a woman of her era, as féw women in Canada, at that time had the opportun- ity to attend university. After graduation she work- ed in a Munitions Factory to help the efforts of World War 1 Following a year at the Ontario College of Education in Toronto, where she quali- fied as a High School Teach- er, Mrs. Coulter taught school in various communi- ties in Ontario, B.C. Alberta and Quebec in addition to travelling extensively around the world. In 1928, she married C.L. Coulter of Port Perry, Ontar- io. Throughout her marriage she lived and taught in Guelph, Ottawa, Port Perry, Toronto and Sutton. Coulter While living in Port Perry she ran the family farm during World War II, as well as teaching in Port Perry High School. Those who were her stud- ents will remember her as a serious, dedicated, indust- rious pedagogue, who ex- pected high standards of performance. The subjects she taught were varied, such as mathematics, Latin, Hist- ory, English, French, Phys- ical Education, typewriting, and bookkeeping. Her know- ledge was so vast that con- versations with her were a fascinating experience.
