Durham Region police officer was called to the Bell Canada building on Queen Street last week to ask picketer from Local 28 of the Communications Workers of Canada to move off the sidewalk to allow trucks driven by management and supervisory personnel to leave the yard. Picketer David Kay moved peacefully when the officer arrived, but two Bell trucks were held up for about half an hour. Joseph Gibson was rushed by air ambulance to Sunny- brook after a car accident on the Scugog Island Road left a three foot long piece of fence post through his neck. The piece of wood was lodged between Mr. Gibson's wind-pipe and spinal cord, but miraculously did no ser- ious damage to vital organs in the neck. On arrival at Sunnybrook, a team of doctors led by Derek Birt, worked ten hours to remove the splinter of wood, and a spokesman for Sunnybrook quotes Dr. Birt as saying that Mr. Gibson "'is very, very, lucky to be PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 29, 1979 -- 3 Fence post missed all vital organs, man recovering alive." Mr. Gibson did suffer a. broken jaw and some dam- age to nerves in the face, but doctors feel there is a chance that this can be corr- ected later by surgery. A small splinter lodged in the brain was removed without permanent damage. For a while after the surg- ery Mr. Gibson required a tracheotomy tube, but this has since been removed, and he is now 'swallowing and able to talk. His condition is listed by the Centre as good. The spokesman for Sunny- brook said that the fact the air ambulance helicopter was used to transfer Mr. Gibson was crucial.
