RT ox a tie Claremont 8-8 in -exciting game by John Wally Nesbitt After a two week layoff, the Port Perry Blues finally managed to finish their regu- lar season play, hosting the ladies .from Claremont. It took a while for Port Perry to get back. into the swing of things again and before the Claremont team was through batting in the first , inning, they had managed to score five times and al- though Port managed to load the bases in their half of the frame, no one crossed the plate for the home' team. Port's first run came in the second inning. when Carol "Bond scored on a double by Carol Wilton but Clarémont still had a four run advant- age heading to their third bat. The visiting team then picked up two runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth to leave Port Perry seven runs behind. However it seems to be the nature of the Blues to let the opposition get ahead and then hope for a-big rally and this is exactly what happen- ed this time. Valerie Sweet- men started off the fourth aning with a single and moved around to third when Lynn Cook nailed a one- baser. Carol Wilton then came to bat and the blond third baseman slugged out her seventh home run of the season. The inning ended with Claremont ahead eight to four. 'Karen Young, work- ing the mound again didn't allow the visitors a hit and then she led off the order in the fifth inning by 'sending the ball to the fence in right field for her first home run of the year. Denise Crawford then singled and scored on Kelly Owen's triple. At this point the Claremont Pitcher was pulled and the new pitcher, coming in cold, al- lowed the next four Blues bases on balls, walking home Kelly and finally Carol Bond with the tying run. Pitchers were changed again and al- ~-though the Port team left two girls on base-in the bottom of - the seventh, strong defensive plays by both teams left the score as it was, the game ending in an 8-8 tie. Denise Crawford picked up the star of the game for her solid performance on second base. With this tie the point standings have, you might say, tightened up consider- ably. Claremont and Mount Albert are now tied for first " place and Port Perry and Bradford are tied for third. The tie breaking games are set for holiday Monday night with Port playing in Brad- ford.
