PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., September 12, 1979 -- 35 Scugog Island and area news by Mrs. Earl Reader Recently Bob and Audrey Archer entertained several guests. First there was a nephew, Cris Habberfield of Burlington. Then Mrs. Lov- ery Todd from DeBarry, 4 Florida paid her first visit to Canada and enjoyed it com- pletely thro' 2 weeks. Allan Boyce of London stayed with Archers prior to his wedding on August 24. At this time the Archers then attended the wedding in Oshawa of Allan and his bride Wilma Prinzen. The community dance mentioned last week is now set for September 29 in the Island Hall. It will take the form of a Hard Times Dance and should prove injeresting. Tickets may be obtained from Beth Heayn or Sharen Bobbie. Last week the. "Head" U.C.W. started their Fall Term with a community corn roast at the "Head" museum Church. As it was such a beautiful evening about 71 members of various families gathered and enjoy- ed an informal social time. After supper many men con- tinued a visit outside while 23 _ women proceeded with the meeting. As the meeting continued the roll call was found to be very interesting and infor- mative as members recalled interesting events that they experienced thro' the summer. Notes of thanks and appre- ciation were received from Jan and Christopher Gerr- ow, Mabel Strong, Beryl Pearce, Amy Smith's daugh- ter, Helen Redman and Mrs. Bill Middleton. We were given instructions re the Turkey Supper at the hall on September 26 and several = tickets were ordered. Several other dates for catering and serving re- freshments were brought to our attention for our approv- al and recording. Mrs. Doreen Adams read "What is a Church." When the meeting closed, all retired to the tea-room for coffee and clean up. We wish Evelyn Redman a fast recovery following her recent surgery. Angus Wilkinson is start- ing his sixth week in hospit- al. Tho' recbvery is notice- able it seems slower than we could wish. On Sunday we were very pleased to see twenty-two children back in Sunday School with their parents, and of course there are many more to get started. Great preparations are being made for a Rally Day on Septem- ber 30 when new teachers will be on hand. We certainly appreciate the generous help offered this year by so many interested young parents who realize the responsibil- ity and difficulty in raising children today. Recently a high school teacher asked a Port Perry class of 38 how many believ- ed in God and only 6 declared their 'belief. Some people .have publicly expressed their feelings that Canada can no longer be considered a Christian country as people are more concerned with pleasure, social position, comfort and wealth than their true purpose in life. Reverend Linstead gave a rousing sermon on "Who is on the Lord's Side?" Don't forget next Sunday September 16 at 2 p.m. for which many have received a special invitation from the Central Seven Association for the Mentally Retarded to attend the official opening of Central Seven Industries. - at North East corner of Region- al Road 8 and Simcoe St. North. The people who have been instrumental in the building of this development have worked very hard and given freely of their time and knowledge for service to the handicapped. Let's support them.
