Rich King, Kevin Mantel and Willy King were among the more than 300 youngsters who registered over the weekend for the minor hockey program. Leo Taylor, treasurer of Port Perry Minor Hockey Association looks on. Play begins this week at the New Scugog Arena. 300 register for Minor Hockey coaches, managers badly needed by Danny Millar The Port Perry Minor Hockey Association Execu- tive held a meeting on Sun- day, September 16 at the Town Hall to select coaches for house league and compet- itive teams. About half of the coaches for travelling teams have been named along with managers. There are still several vacancies to fill most prominent being: Novice A's, Midget B's, Juveniles, and PeeWee B's. The lack of mentors is the only setback facing the Association at this time, according to President Jan Frannsen. "We haven't 'got enough coaches. It could be a serious problem," Mr. Frannsen stated. Two tandems are return- ing with the same units they controlled last year. Butch Potts and Bob Storrey will return to coach and manage, respectively, the Midget A's. Veteran Doug Scott comes back as skipper of the Ban- tam A's along with manager Don Phinney. Scott also coaches the Junior C MoJacks. Bantam B's will be handl- ed by a couple of new faces in Dave Giannini and Garry Baker. Baker will be the boss here. Atom A's will be under the tutelage of coach Dave Bark- ey and manager Bob Jamie- son. Over the past weekend 296 youngsters registered for minor hockey in Port Perry. Mr. Frannsen calls this a OCTOBERFEST is coming to Nestleton Centre SAT., OCTOBER 13 "good turnout for a start. We'll get more out," he adds that the number is "better for a three day turnout than last year." All the competitive A teams will be playing in, the Lakeshore Group, which Mr. Frannsen believes will be more challenging than last ear. Teams in this loop include Port Hope, Peterbor- ough, Oshawa, Stouffville, Whitby and Ajax. Every one of these entries will make the Ontario Minor Hockey Asso- ciation playoff at the sea- son's end. The B teams will play against smaller, north- ern towns such as Little Britain and Beaverton. Last - year they entered the Lake- shore circuit but were, in the main, outclassed. The final order of business at the meeting was the nam- ing of several dates for tournaments. December 27 sees the Bantams in action and a day later the Midgets take the ice. The first tourney of the new year will have Port Perry playing host to the PeeWees on January 19. The next month, on the 2D ODO OD DD. 23, the Atom meet is held. The final tournament of the year is slated for Good Fri- day. The Novices are the attraction then.
