She brough many examples of her work in pictures and jewellery, and these were available for sale following the meeting. Such an intri- cate craft requires many hours of detailed work, and the results are exquisite. One has a definite feeling of pride and accomplishment on the completing of an article using this lovely craft. Our many thanks to Phyllis for an entertainining evening. Students to learn facts of smoking and health September is back-to- school time, and for Durham Region Lung Association this September marks the start of a brand new program in regional schools. Concerned by the increased incidence of regular cigarette smoking among young children, the local Christmas Seal organi- zation has designed a series of classroom visits for Kindergarten to Grade Three students. Gordon Terwillegar, President of the Association and principal of Beau Valley Elementary School says, "Peer pressure appears to be the prime factor in intro- ducing children to the cigarette habit at school. If, early in the school career, positive values for a healthy life-style can be instilled, peer pressure to begin smoking should be more effectively resisted in later grades." The program uses several mediums to deliver its message - film, puppets, flannel board kits and simple smoking experiments are all featured in sessions in- dividually designed for diffe- rent grade levels. Cecil the Sensible Seal and Octopuff the Smoking Octopus will accompany Lynda Corneal, the Association's Educa- tional Programming Co- ordinator, on her visits. "We feel that what child- ren enjoy, they will remem- ber", says Mrs. Corneal, 'so our whole approach will be light and entertaining." The Association feels that overall success of the program depends on its continuity, and ideally presentations should be made to each grade at least once during each school year. "All we ask is that time and we'll do the rest," says Executive Director Angela Tibbles. "We really hope Durham Region's schools will make full use of this free service, and help us tackle the problem of pre-adoles- cent smoking." School visits can be arranged by calling Lynda Corneal at 723-3151, or by writing to Durham Region Lung Association c-o Oshawa General Hospital.
