24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., September 26, 1979 New equipment for High School (From Page 20) not necessarily turn one into a body builder. In order for a student to notice any im- provement, he or she must work at it and keep working at it. It's like most other things, one has to work at it in order to come out ahead of the game. The universal gym is also beneficial for conditioning all inter-school teams. This year, Student Council is again considering sponsor- ing an improvement project for our high school. Thanks again students and we hope to see you out using our universal gym. DRIVING SCHOOL Zenith 77370 (Evenings) Established since 1969 Let Experience Be Your Teacher FUTURA 985-2094 (days) Rocky start to football season Redmen clobbered 36-0 by Whithy by Danny Millar The Varsity Redmen of Port Perry High School were clobbered 36-0 by the Henry Street Hawks in Whitby on Friday, September 21. It was the initial football con- test of the 1979 season for the Redmen. Port Perry was outclassed in every department. Offen- sively, quarterbacks Jim Hinds and Rick Wallace could not move the ball. Whitby's two huge running backs Ray McWhirter and JP Aggett ran through the line all game long. On special teams, Hawks con- nected on five converts and a (0) single on a missed field goal, while Port Perry punter Ed Raffin had a bad day and shanked several kicks. The Hawks scored the first of three first half touch downs on their opening drive as McWhirter took a handoff from Steve Parrott and charged past the goal line from inside the five yard line. The second six- pointer came early in tlie second quarter. Parrott connected on a 40 yard pass and run play to flanker Paul Hunt who beat safety Greg Fedyk cleanly. Aggett plunged in from the five yard line. Aggett and McWhirter worked out of the standard two man, split back forma- tion behind the pivot Parrott. Conversely, the Redman used a full house backfield, lining up in an "L'" forma- tion. Steve McIntyre got the most work from this set behind starter Hinds. Because of a new LOSSA ruling in which each team is given four downs to reach ten yards, the three set back formation is, theoritically at least, sound. The extra play means that there will usually be more running plays. Port Perry has apparently decid- ed to go with one Wide Receiver in Greg Fedyk, who was the leading receiver last season. The formation that the Redmen utilize is a variation of the wishbone where they use two fullbacks who line up beside each other and one tailback. Rarely do these running backs go into motion before the ball is snapped so the defence can ofter predict what is coming. During the Whitby game, tight ends Willie Houthuys and John Wynsma were alt- ernated on almost every play by Port Perry coach Don Westlake. Late in the first half Rick Wallace replaced Hinds as signal caller. Up to that point Hinds had completed one of five passing attempts and had thrown one intercep- tion. Wallace stayed in for the third period and part of the fourth and he too had trouble generating an attack. He went 0 for 3 in pass playes and was sacked twice. Hinds came on again in the last session and finished up, com- pleting one of two passes. He was intercepted once. McWhirter scored the first major of the second half on a play-action pass from Parr- ott. The final scoring dam- age was done by Hunt on an end sweep. Port Offensive Lineman Mike Tobin and Doug Luke suffered minor injuries. Luke temporarily popped a chronic shoulder and Tobin had his nose broken. Both will probably start the next game, scheduled for this Friday, September 28 at the Port Perry High School field.
