Sorry, Deb. that you were missed. Henry Visser and Ben DeJong have returned home after spending a few weeks visiting relatives in Holland. The flowers in the St. John's Anglican Church, Blackstock, on Sunday morning were in memory of Thomas Hodge from his family. Many of our residents have been involved in three week- end fairs - Markham, Rose- neath, and Bobcaygeon. The beautiful weather certainly added to the enjoyment of the various events. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Mec- Laughlin and Mr. & Mrs. Harold McLaughlin attended the Plowing Match in Western Ontario where the men took part in the Horse- shoe Pitching Contest. Roy and Harold lived up to their fine reputation and won the first prize trophy. Congratu- lations. They visited their niece Mrs. Pat Morgan and family at Sarnia on Saturday evening and Sunday morning and then enroute home visited Mr. and Mrs. Denis Blackstock U.C.W. A good number of ladies met in the C.E. Room on Wed. evening for the General meeting of the U.C.W. President Dora Martyn opened the meeting with a poem about friends. Thelma Wright and Jean Ferguson were in charge of worship. They took as their theme "The Rights of a Child". The four basic rights are a good example, education, discip- line and Christian beliefs. It was suggested that we provide small prizes for games at the Whitby Psy- chiatric Hospital. Several ladies who atten- ded the leadership training at Quin-Mo-Lac and Peter- borough reported on some of the highlights. A committee was picked for a banquet coming up in November. One new camper attended Quin-Mo-Lac this year. Dora announced the Presbyterial meetings this fall, October 22 in Newcastle and October 23 in Port Perry. We decided that the U.C.W. would purchase 20 new Bibles for the Primary Dept. of the Sunday School. Margaret Mountjoy intro- duced Mr. Vernon Assel- stine, a past president of the Children's Aid Society who had brought along Mr. Burnard Lewis, a director of the Family and Children's Services for Durham Region. Mr. Lewis gave us a very interesting talk on the work of the Children's Aid Society. Presently there were 269 children in their care and they are working with 467 families. He also answered several questions. Ruby Parsons thanked both gentle- men and presented them with a cheque for their. organization. Lunch con- cluded a very worthwhile and interesting meeting. The second meeting of the Blackstock Bargellos was was held on Tuesday, September 25 at the Black- stock Rec. Centre. President Theresa Wygerde opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge. Our leaders Mrs. Peggy Larmer and Mrs. Betty Lee taught us how to prepare to needlepoint and then how to do one stitch. We have 17 girls in the club. Our officers are: President Theresa Wygerde, Vice President - Janet Weir, Treasurer - Marilyn Green, Press Secre- tary - Elizabeth Kelly and we decided to have a Roving Secretary. Meeting was adjourned by Leanne Van- Camp and seconded by Elizabeth Kelly. Epsom and area news by Jean Jeffery Mr. and Mrs. Potter re- ceived a card from Jeff who is attending school in Ver- mont and he seems to be happy there. Floyd Evans, Elmer Wil- son, Bill and Tom Anderson, Ralph Veitch, Keith Ashton, Norm Tapscott, the Archie Watson and Mel Cracknells were among those from this area who attended the ploughing match at Chatham last week. This Thursday, October 4th from 7 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. Meet The Teacher Night will be held at Epsom and Green- bank schools. The teachers are looking forward to be- coming acquainted with the parents of the pupils. 1st Scugog Manchester Scout Association are look- ing for volunteer leaders for Beavers and cubs. Congratulations to Ruth and Howard Ashton on their 45 wedding anniversary. Ken and Beth Catherwood and boys helped them cele- brate on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Donald As- ling were in Hanover for the weekend. Granddaughter Jennifer was celebrating her 7th birthday. Miss Alvena Jeffery visit- ed her brother Gordon and Mrs. Jeffery on Sunday. Sunday dinner guests with the Norman Wilson family were Doug, Beth and Mich- ael Wilson. Several from here attend- ed the Beta Sigma Phi dance at the music Hall on Satur- day evening. Congratula- tions to Deanna Anderson who won the beautiful quilt lucky draw. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Evans, Mr. and Mrs. Doug Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Neil Evans attended the wedding of Mrs. Ross Evan's niece at Trent River on Saturday. McLaughlin and Aaron at Woodstock. Sounds like a busy weekend. Quite a number of others also atten- ded the Match. Quite a number from here attended the Annual Harvest Home Church Service in Scugog Head Church on Sunday evening. This old time service is complete with lighted oil lamps, hymn songs and pie social. The atmosphere is added to by the Historical Society Choir. The dedication Service of the new Memorial Windows will take place in the United Church next Sunday at the regular 10 a.m. Church Service. Several of our Senior Citizens celebrated birth- days over the weekend. On Friday evening Mrs. Helen Bradburn hosted a family dinner party in honour of her mother Mrs. Mae Wotten's 86th birthday. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wotten, Mr. and Mrs. John Archer, Betty Oxley and Ron Bradburn. On Saturday evening Mr and Mrs. Glenn Gibsonin of Oshawa entertained her parents Mr. and Mrs. Russell Larmer, Mr. and Mrs. Walt Larmer, Havelock also Mrs. Florence Larmer and Miss Edna Larmer for an evening dinner to celeb- rate her father's 80th birth- day. After dinner other family members surprised Mr. Larner for a family birthday gathering. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Don Larmer, Peterborough, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Gibson, Bowmanville, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Larmer, Cathy, Carol and Mary Angela of Barrie, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Larmer, Pickering, and Mr. and Mrs. John Murdock, Grand Bend. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Gibson, Grace and Eleanor hosted a family gathering in honour of the 87th birthday of Cecil's mother, Mrs. Edna Bradley. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Gibson, Port Hope, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Robinson, Hampton, and Mr. and Mrs. Art Gibson, Port Perry. Congratulations to three fine folk. At the Senior Citizen's Card Party on Tuesday evening there were 21 tables with the following winners: 1-Ross Alsop - 85. 2-Jennie Bailey-82. 3-Erma Watson-82. 4-Harold Burgess -81. 5-Agnes Prescott-78. 6- Bert Gibson-78.
