18-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, October 3, 1979 New money regulations for livestock killed by animals Agriculture and Food Minister Lorne C. Henderson has announced that regula- tions are now in effect cover- ing the amount of compen- sation farmers may receive for livestock or poultry killed or injured by dogs, hunters and bears. Under the new regulations, a farmer is entitled to a maximum of $1,000 per animal for cattle, $200 per head of sheep, goats and hogs, and $100 for a fur- bearing animal. A maxi- mum of $500 applies to horses. For poultry, one owner may receive a maxi- mum of $1,000 in any one year. Maximum compen- sation for an individual rabbit is $20, with a $1,000 maximum to one owner in a year. For hive equipment, maximum compensation has been set at $50, and for honey bees at $25. The amount of any insurance payable on a killed or injured animal will be deducted from the estimated market value of the animal, and compensation calcu- lated on that basis. In making the announce- ment, Mr. Henderson said, "The problem of dogs running loose in rural areas and attacking livestock is a particularly serious one. Personally, I think the most effective solution would be for people to take a respon- sible attitude towards their pets and keep them at home. Until that happens, however, farmers must not be left to bear the financial burden caused by other people's dogs." The regulations came into effect September 15, 1979, and will enable the program to respond to changes in the market value of livestock and poultry without the lengthy delay involved Durham College to offer four new training courses Durham College's Adult Training Division is offering four new courses starting October 9.
