After being out- classed by a powerful Whit- by football team 36-0 last week, the Port Perry Varsity Redmen rebounded to lose 28-12 to the Dunbarton Spar- tans on Friday, September 28. The loss marked the "second in as many starts for Port and the game was witnessed by a large crowd of students at the high school field. Port Perry's most recent effort was more impressive than its last, despite the fact that the Spartans are not as good a team as Henry Street of Whitby. The work of quarterbacks Jim Hinds and Rick Wallace was improved slightly, and the running game, out of the wishbone set was markedly more effective. The Redmen got on the scoreboard for the first time this season on an exciting second quarter razzle-dazzle is Dunbarton running Mike Costello who scored two TD's to lead his team to DENURE TOURS Quality Motorcoach Tours rs PM A Ll 3 back play. The play started on an end around sweep as receiv- er Greg Fedyk took a pitch- out from Wallace. Instead of Junning, Fedyk hit tight end John Wynsma with a perfect pass. Wynsma ran the final few yards to the end zone. The daring execution put Port Perry within eight points as the Spartans had converted two earlier touch- downs. The first Dunbarton major came on a 75 yard sweep by running back Mike Costello midway through the first period. The sweeps to both sides were the most effective plays from scrimmage by the visitors during the game. They put a lot of heat on the Redmen cornerbacks and secondary. After their initial offensive Dunbarton mounted another drive that culminated in a quarterback bootleg by Steve Howlett from inside the five yard line. Redmen drop second game =i: PENALTY HURT Brian Barr came up with his first of two turnovers with less than a minute remaining in the opening half. His most spectacular play came when he picked up a fourth quarter fumble and raced across the Spartan's goal line only to have the touchdown called back on a clipping penalty. The Redmen changed their offence for the game and utilized Fedyk as a ball carrier on several occasions. With the three running backs currently employed in the offensive backfield the two pivot men did not do a lot of throwing. Combined, Wall- ace and Hinds completed three of seven pass attempts. They were each sacked once. They each played about half of the match. Hinds scored the last six points of the contest when he plunged over from the Dun- barton three yard line after time consuming offensive series that was set up on Barr's recovery. He scored with 40 seconds left. Dunbarton's two touch- downs in the second half were counted by Costello and Dale McLare. Costello's came on a 50 yard sweep in the third period and Mec- Lare's on a three yard run early in the final frame. McLare's was set up on a 40 yard sweep by Howlett. Howlett was stopped from scoring on the play by a Fedyk tackle. There are a couple of major problems to be solved before Port Perry becomes a contender. Kicker Ed Raffin had another rough day as he missed a convert and had a punt blocked. He will pro- bably improve towards the TRENTWAY TOURS .
