They have struck up a relationship with Mr. and Mrs. Chow who operate the Town Restaurant in Port Perry. The Poc family is ethnic Chinese in origin and they are able to converse in Chinese. Speaking through an inter- Pl HIE pretor, Mr. Poc told the Star that his family is very grate- ful to the people of Port Perry who have helped them settle here. On Monday, just one week after arriving -in this country, Mr. Poc began his first job in Canada, at a small manufacturing plant just outside Port Perry. No doubt the months ahead will be difficult ones for the family, overcoming lang- uage barriers, coping with a totally different way of life, strange new customs, and in a few short weeks, their first taste of Canadian winter. But obviously, the toughest part is behind them: the -, Viet Nam family arrives decision to leave Viet Nam, the week at sea, the 10 months in a refugee camp. Even the Canadian winter may look good after that. --= The decision to flee their native country was a diffi- cult one. Mr. Poc's father still remains there, as do his five brothers and a sister. Other members of his family were killed in the war. While this is the first refu- gee family to find a new home in Port Perry area, at least one other group has made an application to spon- sor a family to this area, and 14 families will be settling in Oshawa.
