SW SAL wh Sera Ae a Tat: eT AR Rta Tra 1] 0 10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 10, 1979 Local clothing store owner confident in future of area Gregory's Mens Wear officially opened a new store in the Port Perry Plaza last week, and owner Greg Heffering is confident that the expanded premises will help do two things: increase the volume of business, and give better selection and service to his customers. The brightly lit and attrac- tively decorated store has a total floor space area of just under 2,000 square feet, more than double the 880 square feet in the old store at Lakeview Plaza which Mr. Heffering opened five years ago. He is confident not only of the potential of his own business, but the general economic climate for Port Perry and Scugog Township over the next five years or so. In fact, he projects that the increase in business at his store will be three-fold in the next few years: Actuaily, the new store at Port Perry Plaza opened for business early last month, and Mr. Heffering says that already he notices an up- ward trend in business volume. He has a ten-year lease on the store, and the interior renovations, done by Trewline Construction, amounted to $15,000. Mr. Heffering has been in the mens clothing business for almost all his adult life, going back to when he was 18 and started selling as a part- time clerk for a large depart- ment store in Oshawa. He worked for a time at the Eaton's Queen Street store in Toronto, then in the appli- ance department and then in the Eaton's catalogue department. But getting into the cloth- ing business for himself was an ambition he had for a long time. After looking at the Port Perry area for a couple of years, he opened his store here in 1974. Mr. Heffering offers a middle of the line variety in mens clothes, both in fashion STOUFFVILLE BAKERY PORT PERRY PLAZA Special this Week 24 oz. White Golden Toast Bread; 24 0z. 75% Whole Wheat Bread. Mens fashions are some- times fickle and subject to change. Mr. Heffering says that this fall and winter, tweeds and muted "earth tone colours' are popular. Also, men are buying sports jackets and slacks, possibly because this kind of attire is versatile, and because jacket and tie are accepted more and more by society for occasions which a few years ago almost demanded that only a suit be worn. Also this year, ties, lapels, and pant legs are getting narrower. Gone are the days of wide ties in loud colours with wall-to-wall lapels. Mr. Heffering says that fashion trends for men almost always have their roots in Europe and make their way to this side of the Atlantic through New York. He says that Canada is about three months behind the trends, but that may be changing as both Toronto and Montreal are becoming centres for the manufacture and design of mens clothing. Competition in the mens clothing industry is fierce, and Mr. Heffering knows : that it i hat a og. 0) for he Gregory and Barbara Heffering welcomed customers and friends during the retailer to compete price- Grand Re-Opening of their new and larger location in the Port Perry Plaza. wise with the volume buying of the major chains.
