Decision likely this week OLD ) ARENA DOOMED? The fate of the old Port Perry Arena on Water Street is on the line as Scugog Township council will likely decide this week whether to approve money for repairs to keep the arena open for another season, or have it torn down. A report tabled at the regular meeting of council Tuesday evening from a con- sulting engineering firm pre- sents a bleak picture for the structure, and while mem- bers of council put off any decision until at least the end of this week, the chances of the arena opening for use this winter are not good. Council learned from the consulting firm of August Apon and Associates that $4000 must be spent immed- iately on repairs if the arena is to stay open this season. Also, the report says that "eon must be carried out once a month at a cost of $600. Included in the report are the recommendations that the arena not be used "dur- ing a high windstorm," or when there is an .accum- ulation of "more than a few inches of snow on the roof." And, unless $2000 is spent to prop up the south stands, they should be roped off. A more detailed report on the nature of the structural problems with the arena was also tabled at council Tues- day evening. It says that in- spections carried out last month revealed that there is rot forming in a number of trusses at several locations, and there is "substantial rot" appearing on the walk- way. Council took no action on the fate of the arena, other Delegation asks council todrop fire decision Scugog council is getting the heat from a group of. property owners in Ward 1 who are upset that the Town- ship is considering opting out of an agreement with the Uxbridge Fire department for protection services in the northwest part of Scugog Township. A delegation of 14 property owners living in that part of the Township attended Tues- day night's meeting of coun- cil and presented a petition with 65 signatures. Spokesmen Frank Gordon and Dr. Carl Puterbough asked council to rescind a resolution passed September 24 which calls on Scugog to start negotiations with ux- bridge Township to opt out of the agreement whereby the Uxbridge department an- swers fire calls for some 250 people in the northwest sec- tion of Scugog Township. Mr. Gordon, who is a fire- fighter in Scarborough, told council on Tuesday that when he and his neighbours first heard that Scugog was considering getting out of the agreement, they "were shocked at the idea." Mr. Gordon said that not only would some of the householders face a substan- tail hike in their fire insur- ance premiums, "the re- sponse time also concerns us." "A difference of five miles can mean a lot of time when getting to a fire," said Mr. Gordon. Scugog council unanim- ously passed a resolution September 24 to try to neg- otiate out of the agreement. A delegation from the Scu- gog Fire department told council that it could provide the same level of protection (Turn to page 18) Committee to ask likes and dislikes of Durham Region Ratepayers in Scugog Township are going to get their chance to say what they like or don't like about Durham Region when a special committee of the Regional council holds a public meeting in Port Perry early next month. The committee, made up of Regional councillors from all eight municipalities in Durham, began its public hearings in Ajax last Wed- nesday evening, and will hold its second meeting tonight, October 10, in Cannington. The meeting scheduled for Port Perry will be held November 7 at the municipal offices on Perry Street at 7:30 P.M. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor is vice-chairman of this committee that was selected by Regional council last month, and he told the Star that any individual or organization can present a written or oral brief at the meeting November 7 just by showing up. "There is no formal proce- dure for getting on the agenda at the meeting," said Mayor Taylor. "The com- mittee will hear anyone who wants to make a presenta- tion." Mayor Taylor has suppor- ted the concept of this (Turn to page 18) than to ask for clarification of the cost of monthly in- spections, and to turn the reports over to the Arena Board which meets this Wed- nesday night. Whatever council decides to do with the arena for this season, Mayor Jerry Taylor made it clear Tuesday night that no more money will be spent on repairs after this season. But whether the arena gets use this season seems un- likely as at least one coun- cillor expressed doubts. "The fact that the engin- eers feel it should be inspect- ed every month concerns me,' said Ward 3 councillor John Williams. If a decision is made not to put the money into the build- ing for repairs this season, it will mean that minor hockey and ringette could be short up to 14 hours of weekly ice time. That situation was dis- cussed briefly by council Tuesday evening, and Ward 4 councillor John Wolters said that the Blackstock Arena Board will make an effort to provide ice time at the arena in that community. The Blackstock Board, of which councillor Wolters isa member, will meet this week. In the meantime, Scugog council has a special meet- ing scheduled for this Fri- day, and it is expected that a final decision on the old arena will be made at that time. 36 Pages POPPY 0000000000800 088088500000.
