MALY, 3 at TR AA 5 Fn aL 2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 10, 1979 Museum closes doors, end busy 10th season by Jane Baird rator Another surhmer of activ- ity has ended at Scugog Shores Historical Museum, the 10th anniversary of the Museum's opening. It has been a busy season with over 3000 visitors enjoy- ing the many displays and special exhibitions. The visi- tors came from all over Ontario, Quebec, parts of the United States, the British Isles, Germany and Holland. As in other years, the guests often contributed to our store of information about history, our artifacts and local lore. During the spring, there were two school tours each week, and some this fall. A number of adult groups arranged spec- ial tours as well. The guests were especially appreciative of the guides who hosted their visits. The Around Scugog Dr. Helen Ottenbrite has just returned from a seminar on the Sacro Occipital Tech- nique of Chiropractic and on the Cranial Technique. These seminars were held in Omaha, Nebraska. She also took the instructors course in the Cranial Technique. Dr. Ottenbrite's husband Peter accompanied her and he took the assistant course and qualified. Museum's volunteer guide system seems to be unique in the experience of many, and is greatly enjoyed. There have been a number of thank you notes sent to the Museum from visitors who ask to be remembered to the "little lady in the cabin," or "that nice man who told us about....." Our 10th anniversary sea- son got off to a fine start early in May when her Hon- our Pauline McGibbon, Lieu- tenant-Governor of Ontario, officially opened the Museum. Many people from the Scugog area: were on hand for the special cere- monies. This year, too, we have had many volunteer demon- strators who make each Sun- day and every tour a gala event, and a learning exper- ience for guests and guides as well. Many thanks. Thanks for a successful season go, also to those hard workers who added to our plant a new drive shed exhib- it, a large new washroom, shirts for the men, lovely gardens and many new dis- plays. To all who gave of money, time and effort, and loaned precious possessions, it was certainly valued. During the 1979 season the Museum benefited from the generosity of many who gave artifacts of all kinds. We received and appreciated over four hundred items which included a beautiful hat from the turn of the Century, a handcrafted nail, and the iron kettle which saved the lamb as told in Farmer's chapter on the Tornado of 1850. Each item has a story and conveys something of history; each is exciting in itself. We also purchased a set of chairs created by William Dunn the local cabinet maker. To catalogue and record these gifts and earlier acces- sions we had the services of two Cataloguers, Pat Haug- en and Sara Young who came to us through the Ont- ario Ministry of Culture and Recreation an an Experience "79 grant. They dealt with over a thousand items as .well as forty-four trays of printer's type and one hund- red and fifty-eight hand writ- ten legal documents, deci- phering old script to place information in our new Ar- chive files. The archival material was put in order by Trish Holman who came to us as Researcher on the Experience Programme. Trish spent long hours in Pine Grove Cemetery where there are over 6000 stones bearing information which will untimately go into our Archives. We celebrated the season's end at the annual Thanksgiv- ing Service on September 30th hostessed by the U.C.W. who have helped this and every year to make the Museum such a success.
