PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 10, 1979 -- 33 Yelverton and area news items by Harvey Malcolm Miss Jennifer Kennington of Lotus was honoured by her teenage peers with a sur- prise Birthday party at the home of her parents'the Bob Kenningtons of Lotus on Saturday night. Mr.. and Mrs. Frank Glasbergen Sr. were also given a surprise party on Saturday at the home of their son Mr. and Mrs. Frank Glasbergen Jr. and family. The party took the form of a family dinner with their five sons, their wives and fami- lies and their only daughter Corrie, hubby Auke and family. These included Mr. and Mrs. Frank Glasbergen Sr. of Orono, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Glasbergen and family of Newtonville, Mr. and Mrs. George Glasbergen & family of Oshawa, Mr. & Mrs. Auke Van Der Mur and family of Cedar Creek, Mr. and Mrs. Case Glasbergen and family of Ajax, and Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Glasbergen of Port Perry. Also in attendance were cousins of the family - Mr. and Ms. Harry Glasber- gen of Oshawa, and Mr. and Mrs. Rodenburg of Oshawa. Following a bountiful salad dinner, some 10 local couples from our Yelverton community joined the throng to honour Frank & Elizabeth on the occasion of their 45th wedding anniversary - the Glasbergens were married in Holland on September 26, 1934, In recognition of the auspi- cious occasion, the Glasber- gens were: subjected to a rather "'ryebold"' (or should that be ribald) poem which dealt rather factiously with the years they lived on the farm south of Yelverton. On behalf of their Yelverton friends they were presented with a 45th Anniversary plate (amethyst in colour) and six tumblers of Pinwheel crystal by Mrs. Eileen Malcolm and Mrs. Corrie Malcolm. Two lovely cakes were presented for the occasion - one to eat and a lovely masterpiece concocted for the occasion by Marlene Glasbergen. The balance of the evening flitted away quickly in raucous repartee as only one can enjoy with this fun loving Dutch Canadian family. Elizabeth and Frank expressed their gratitude for the gifts and pleasant evening arranged for them and to Marlene and Frank who bore the brunt of the planning the festive occa- sion. Most of the Glasber- gens grandchildren were in attendance. Earlier a family portrait was taken to be given to the Glasbergens to mark this happy event. The Norman Wilsons have a bumper crop of potatoes in their garden. Norm showed us a 4 qt. basket which was filled with only four potatoes. Would you believe it if I told you that they were so big that Norm had to harvest them with a bulldozer and roll them into the celldar with a canthook. - I was afraid you wouldn't! Everyone, particularly the flies, really enjoyed the lovely warm fall weather, this past week -and no doubt brief but highly appreciated respite from icy blasts too soon to come. Mr. & Mrs. Los De Guisti of Toronto were weekend visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Russo and Jeffery. The veil of secrecy has now been lifted. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Wilson have sold their farm to their nephew Mr. and Mrs. Brian Wilson of this com- munity and have purchased a new home in the Janetville subdivision. Their auction sale is scheduled for Novem- ber 10th. Mrs. Audrie Brown atten- ded the 50th Wedding Anni- versary this weekend of Mr. and Mrs. Pickitt Sr. of Toronto who are the parents of her son-in-law Mr. Paul Pickitt of Toronto. At Sunday Service the Yelverton Congregation was favoured with two musical treats - a solo by Doug from Springwater Trailer Park and a vocal duet by our minister Mr. Art Rodgers and his daughter Lori with her own piano accordian accompaniment. Yelverton Girls lost their last game vs. Janetville Girls in a close game by a 4-3 score. The series now stands at 3-2 for Yelverton in a 4 out of 7. Miss Gloria McCullough one of Yelverton's better players has been sidelined with a broken finger. Mrs. Hazel Whittaker of Lindsay leaves Thursday to spend a few weeks with her daughter and granddaugh- ters and their families in Vancouver. Here also she anticipates spending some time with her son Donald who will be retyrning from Saudi Arabia for a few weeks vacation in Canada. Mrs. Audrie Brown is on the Anniversary circuit. Last week she attended the 50th Wedding Anniversary celebrations of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Pickett at the home of their son and wife Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pickett of Toron- to. On Saturday she plans to attend the 25th Anniversary of her step-son and his wife Mr. and Mrs. Eldon McFarland also in Toronto. Congratulations to the Maltheb Farms (the Yelver- ton Girls softball team) who finally eliminated all 'their competition by finishing off the Janetville Girls in the sixth game by a score of 6 to 3in the 4 out of seven series. The winning lineup was as follows: Catcher: Sharon Kerr; pitcher - Mary McCul- lough, 1st Base - Wanda Weightman, 2nd Base - Mona Malcolm, 3rd Base - Susie Fallis. Shortstop - Anne Hurrin; Carol Finney - L. Field, Gwen Gray - Centre Field and Cathy Plumtree - Right Field. Alternates - Gloria McCullough, Debbie Kerr, Mrs. Van Der Wart and coach Dale Stinson. Mrs. Robt. Kerr presented the girls with the North Durham Cup - the Eva Thomas trophy. Deepest sympathy is extended to Mr. Wilson Heaslip of Lindsay and Mrs. Heaslip's family in the sud- den passing of a loving wife and mother - Mrs. Margaret Heaslip. Marg despite a continuing health problem over the past number of years, possessed a great vitality and love of life that kept her involved in many community activities. She was earlier an active member of Song Spinners and Lindsay Hospital Auxi- - liary. Margaret, during her years in our community, was an active member of the U.C.W, and active in various community projects. All Picture 'Homes, Purchased Now WILL BE AT THE City Convenience ...
