Council grants money, site for new library In one fell swoop Tuesday evening, Scugog Township council tossed the plans for an expansion of the library right back in the lap of the Library Board. Council approved a res- olution which officially commits the Township to pay one-third of the constr- uction cost of a library ex- pansion up to $100,000, and gives the Library Board a parcel of land on Water Street, 'the exact location to be determined by the Lib- rary Board and council." Council made the formal commitment of money and a site to help enable the Lib- rary Board get final approv- al for a Wintario grant of up to $100,000 to pay for a proposed expansion of lib- rary services in Scugog Township. The resolution giving the Library the money and the site was not passed unan- imously, however, as Ward 4 councillor John Wolters ar- gued that further study should be given to expanding the existing library building on Queen Street. "I can't go along with any proposal to move the Library to Water Street," said coun- cillor Wolters. "I am disappointed that the Library Board has not come up with an alternative plan for an expansion to the Queen Street building," he ell ETT TUE DTT TTT THT TT TUTTI Te MINI CINEMA sgs.853 added. The proposal to expand the Queen Street building was effectively killed two weeks ago when the local comm- ittee of adjustment turned down an application by the Library Board for minor variances, and the Township consultants said in a report to council that the area behind the Queen sTreet lib- GRADUATE Janice Smith, daughter of Mrs. Leo Smith and the late Leo Smith of Port Perry has graduated from Sir Sandford Fleming College with a degree in Social Services. Councillor Wolters got no support from the other mem- bers of council. including Mayor Jerry Taylor who at one point said "I would not spend my own money to expand the old Queen Street library building, so how can I justify spending taxpayers money?" "It would be a complete waste of money to spend it there. The consultants re- ports (on the flooding) and a report from the Ministry of Natural Resources were both done by professionals who said we should not ex- pand at the present site," said Mayor Taylor. Ward 1 councillor Don Crosier, who along with cou- ncillor John Wolters has opposed a new library build- ing, was not present at the meeting when the resolution was passed. MSE 1A4 MINISTRY OF CONSUMER AND COMMERCIAL RELATIONS THE LIQUOR LICENCE ACT, 1975 meeting to attend. The resolution that did pass council on Tuesday night is very specific in spelling out conditions under which the funds and site will be turned over to the Library Board. Any new library must be known as the War Memorial Library, and more import- antly, the local Legion Br- anch 419 must approve the location in a new building of the Book of Memory, the plaque, the War Memorial Stone, and any other items that make up the War Mem- orial aspect of the present library. KAYSER FALL HOSIERY Members of the Legion executive have told mem- bers of council recently that they have no objection to moving the historical and commemorative objects of the War Memorial to a new library building if one is constructed. The Legion only wants assurance that the War Memorial aspect of any new library would continue. Also, the resolution passed by council, specifically does not spell out which parcel of land on Water Street is to be turned over to the Board for a new building. It could be part of a parcel on the waterfront purchased this spring that was once the site of Lake Scugog Lumber. Or, it could be land where the old Port Perry Arena is now located. The future of that arena is very much in doubt at this time (see story on page one) and if council decides that no more money will be spent for repairs to the arena, it will be torn down. In passing the resolution to grant the money and the site for a new library building, members of council made it clear that the next move in the long, drawn-out plans to expand the library is now up to the Library Board.
