Port Perry High School has a new 'Reach for the Top' team and they are busy getting ready for their appearance on CKVR tele- vision where they will be competing against other schools from Southern Ontario. The team is comprised of David Bruce, Leanne Kerr, Kathy Irvine and Alfie Huggins. These four extremely knowledge- able students are donating their spare time in prepara- tion for the stiff competition on October 13; air date TBA in December. Good Luck in representing your school. The music students under the direction of Mr. Baird and Mr. Chellew are once again selling top quality oranges and grapefruit. The money collected from these sales will be used for an DID YOU KNOW... An upcoming event hoped to be carried out annually is the return of Mike Mandell, a mentalist. Mike Mandel came to Port Perry last year and everyone who was at his performance, loved it. For those of you who missed it last time, or those of you who want to come again, don't forget; he'll be at the school the eve of November 14. Don't miss him. The girls basketball teams have been busy this week. On Monday, they travelled to Courtice High School and on Wednesday to Clark High School. Both times the midget and junior teams won their games and our seniors lost. The boy's junior volleyball team did extremely well at Donevan High School in Oshawa on Saturday. The boys came in second out of nine schools in the tourna- ment. Congratulations guys! Keep it up, we're all rooting for you. Unfortunately, our Senior Football team didn't do so well. The student athletic department is planning a "Rent-an-Athlete" day: all students are eligible to par- ticipate. What this actually means is on Saturday, October 20, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., students are donating their time to help the resi- dents of Port Perry in the fearsome job of fall clean-up. For the small wage of $2.00 per hour students will come to your home and help with this annual event. This may include washing windows, raking leaves, or whatever project you have in mind for these ambitious teenagers. The money earned by these students will help to buy their school a major piece of equipment to be used in class time and after hours. So support your local high school and let us help you in some way. Merrill Ferguson of Oshawa will be the guest speaker. The Prince Albert Orchestra will present a variety of numbers and the Sr. Choir is preparing special music. All are invited for a social get together following the ser- vice. . Then at night young parents have to decide to go to the special service in the Port Perry United at 7:30 p.m. where the young people have invited a speaker from 100 Huntley St. or to a parent's meeting at the Com- munity Hall at 7 p.m. for those interested in their children's activities in Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brow- nies and Beavers. It is possible at least one Scout leader has already volun- teered his services. A former resident, Gordon Shunk, passed away sudden- ly in his home, north of Port Perry on Sunday evening. Those in hospital are Allene Kane, Jim Wilson, and Angus Wilkinson, who had a relapse of encephalitis. Many Island people went on the weekend bus trip to Nashville. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hor- top took a weekend holiday to Kentucky where they also attended a wedding. Those from the Island who joined in on the bus trip to Haliburton to Lake Kashaga- wigamog last Tuesday were Mrs. Mary Sweetman, Mrs. Reta Reader and Mrs. Han- ley and her niece Mrs. Han- ley from Port View Beach. The Service at the Island Church was well attended for Thanksgiving. , The atmos- phere with fall colours in decorations made us very mindful of the season of God's gifts to us. The choir had their colourful new coll- ars to match too. The choir numbers are gradually in- creasing again. But every- where more men are needed. Plans are underway to organize a Skating Club in Port Perry in conjunction with the Oshawa Figure Skating Club. Peter Sulman, 3rd year student at Ryerson, taking Mechanical and Industrial Technology Course, received the Massey-Harris Company's scholarship on second year work. Mr. Wm. Doupe of Seattle, U.S.A. is visiting with Mr. and Mrs. S. Oyler. Many other friends were pleased to meet William who was a lad in our midst nearly thirty years ago. 20 YEARS AGO Thursday, October 29, 1959 With Christmas season drawing near, Mr. Harvey Hall was pleased to learn that he was a prize winner in the Irish Sweepstakes draw. Eunice Roach was the guest of Carol Wilson of the Island on Monday night and attended a Hallowe'en party there. Mr. and Mrs. Olsen and family have moved to their new home in Prince Albert. The Port Perry students surpassed their goal of $1800. in their magazine campaign by bringing in a grand total of $2154.38. 15 YEARS AGO Thursday, October 29, 1964 The installation of the Maybelle Rebekah Lodge took place on Tuesday, October 29th. The top three of- ficers were Sister Georgina Moore, Past Noble Grand; Sister Helen Redman, Noble Grand; and Sister Ruby Roach, Vice Grand. About 250 ladies attended the fun- ction and presiding over the installation was the District Deputy President, Sister Grace Murdock from Bowmanville. Mrs. G. Groupe, Prince Albert, has returned to her home in Philadelphia for the winter months. Over thirty-five members and past members of the Scout and Cub Mothers' Auxiliary, assembled to pay tribute to the guest of honour, Mrs. Leslie McDonald before her departure to Toronto with her family, where they are planning to make their home. Mrs. George Wolfe, Blackstock, spent Thursday night with Dr. and Mrs. R.M. Werry and attended the teacher's convention in Kingston on Friday. Mrs. Kathleen Hook and Mrs. E. Jean Gray atten- ded the 40th Annual Convention of the Ontario Hospital Association, held in Toronto last week. 10 YEARS AGO Thursday, October 23, 1969 The Historical Society announced this week that the winners of the six prizes for participation will go this year to Miss Heather Stephens, Mr. Julian Diamond, Mr. Rick Stephens, Mr. Terry Adderley, all of Port Perry; Mr. Everett Prentice of Scugog Island; and Mr. K. Munroe of R.R.1, Port Perry. These people were responsible for collecting $791. The Historical Society also announced that the Canoe the Nonquon race resulted in net contributions of $2,100. after ex- penses. Dr. M.B. Dymond gave an interesting speech on Medicare in Ontario at a meeting of the Lions Club at Club Annrene on Monday night. W.R.EN. Crystal Monahan has returned to her station at Shelburne, N.S. after enjoying a leave at home in Seagrave. Mr. and Mrs. F. Gibson of Prince Albert, enjoyed the weekend with friends, Mr. and Mrs. L. Milikin of Haggersville and attended the Plowing Match in Paris. Mrs. George Lane and family attended the wed- ding of her first grandchild, Miss Willa Howard, to Mr. Victor Rautiainen in Sudbury on Saturday. October 18th.
