20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 17, 1979 After 56-19 loss to Uxbridge Redmen still looking for by Danny Millar Greg Fedyk scored two' touchdowns and Steve Mac- Intyre added another but it was far from enough as the Port Perry Redmen bowed to the Tigers of Uxbridge 56-19 on Wednesday, October 10 in Port Perry. Loss number four was posted on the Redmen Varsity football team's ledger this season. Wide receiver Fedyk's major scores came on long pass and run plays. He caught the passes from quar- terbacks Jim Hinds and Rick Wallace. On the first, Port Perry Coach Jerry Cole est- imated that Fedyk ran 70 yards and another 50 in the second. "He literally outran the halfback who was covering him on both occasions," said Cole. MacIntyre scored his first touchdown of the season from the setback position out of the wishbone offence. He ran in from the five yard line. MacIntyre becomes the first running back to score a touchdown, lending evidence to the lack of speed in the Redmen backfield. Coach Cole was not shell- shocked by the large score tallied against his defence. "I think they played their hearts out', he stated. He had high words of praise for defensive captain Doug Luke. "He played a heckuva strong game at the lineback- er position." Defensive back Brian Barr drew compli ments, as did Fedyk and MacIntyre. To date the Redmen have allowed over 160 points, an average of 40 per game. They have managed 31 in the same time and have been shutout twice. Has this year been a disap- pointment to the skipper? "I wouldn't say that," Cole en- thuses, "We've got some really young kids." Cole stated that many of the players are in lower grades and being a Varsity team, are forced to compete against Senior teams. "This is really our prob- lem. some of them just can't compete. But they're in there trying. We have many guys who can hold their own," Cole stated. The coach is still upset with the problem that faced his team last year. He believes that the older stud- ents are not trying out for the football teams, and he main- tains that this is because the sport does not attract Port Perry students. Coach Cole does not like the recent switch to the American style of football where a team gets four downs instead of last year's three, in which to gain ten yards. "You don't get the changeover that you did with the three downs." He said first win victory that uxoriage did not have to punt once during the match because of this. Anderson Raiders are the opposition of the Redmen on Thursday, October 18, at the Civic Fields in Oshawa. Atom Stars run against tough Ajax opposition Port Perry Malmont Farms Atoms travelled to Ajax on Sunday, October 14, for their first game of the season. Port went down to defeat 9-3, by the tireless Ajax team but the score really didn't indicate the play. The first and second periods saw good end to end hockey, with good passing plays which was delightful to see after such a short time of practicing together, and so early in the year. The score at the end of the second period was Ajax 4, Port 3. Ajax went ahead in the third period. Port had sever- al goal opportunities but just couldn't get the puck past the sharp Ajax goalies. Port's goals were scored by Steven Durham from Dave Burnett and John Lal- ly; John Harmon, unassist- ed; and Robbie Baker, un- assisted. On Friday, October 19th at 8:00 p.m. the Malmont Atoms take on the Cobourg team. They should be in fine form sporting new sweaters. The Malmont Atoms will have keen competition this year meeting teams from of before! 2nd Floor 700 Bay Street Name Ne Toronto, Ontario MSG 126 help in your community.
