Art Yeo, a volunteer with the CNIB displays the "talking book machine' which allows blind people access to printed material through tape recordings. With Mr. Yeo is Jim Elliot of the Port Perry Lions Club, which will be canvassing this week in Port Perry. " CNIB fund-raising blitz on this week Across Canada there are about 30,000 blind people. Nearly one-third of them live in Ontaric. In Durham Region, there are 200 blind, and about 15 live in Scugog Township. A legally blind person has less than 10 per cent normal vision. This is CNIB Week in Scugog Township, and the Port Perry Lions Club is conducting its annual fund raising blitz with a door to door canvas of households on October 24 and 25. The money raised will be turned over to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind for use in the many services and programs that the CNIB offers for blind people. One of these services is the Talking Book Machine. It is an easy to use tape recorder, and with it the blind person has access to about 4,000 works of fiction on file in the tape library of the CNIB, along with such regular periodicals as Readers Digest, Macleans, Saturday Night and Chatelaine. One of the advantages of the Talking Book Machine is its efficiency. For example, one issue of Readers Digest L&J COIN ILAUNDROMAT} 68 WATER STREET - PORT PERRY Now Open to Serve You 8AM.to11P.M. 7 DAYS A WEEK takes as much as four large volumes in Braille. That same issue can be condensed onto two cassette tapes which last about seven hours. The length of novels on tape varies, with the Russion classic War and Peace lasting almost 60 hours. It would take a blind person much longer to read the same book in Braille. The recording machines now being used by the CNIB have been available for about a year, but the concept is about 15 years old. The machines and the tapes are provided free of charge by the CNIB, which buys them direct from the manufacturer at a cost of about $110. The cost of producing one tape is about $14, and the CNIB tape library is constantly being expanded. i Mr. Art Yeo of Oshawa is a CNIB volunteer worker in Durham Region, and he told the Star recently that money raised for tlie organization is used in a variety of ways: rehabilitation, counselling, seeing eye dogs, and for educational material on blindness and its causes. The blitz by the Lions Club in Scugog will be held on October 24 and 25, or anyone wishing to make a donation can do so at any of the three banks in Port Perry. 2 Men's Heavy Quality he ' RR WORK SOCKS ...$4.95 i Men's Winter Boots (Lined) Kodiak - Cougar - North Star Men's Foamtread Slippers $8.95 - $10.95 Men's Jarman Shoes OXFORDS - LOAFERS $49.95 \ FF Women's Boots ... $35.00 STOCK LINES OF: ; STANFIELD - LEVI - G.W.G. i McGREGOR HOSIERY 4 ARROW SHIRTS PENMANS - CARHARTT - BRADSHAW A.W.
