Although the Wintario grant application has not yet been approved, Mr. Preston said after the meeting that Wintario officials have indicated that it will be now that a specific site has been designated, and the council has agreed to put up $100,000 towards the cost. On November 10, the Library Board will kick off a Township wide fund-raising blitz and construction of a new building is tentatively slated to get underway in April or May of next year. (OA The proposal to build a new Scugog Public Library has been a long and difficult one, going back more than a year. This spring, when plans for a new building were announced, there was some opposition from the public, which came to a boil at a public meeting held at the high school. Since then, however, the Board and council learned 'that it would be virtually impossible to add an exten- sion on the back of the War Memorial Library building on Queen Street because of the flood potential of the land, and because there is Snack Right - theme for Nutrition Week By Linda Caldwell October 21-27 is 'Nutrition Week". This year's slogan is "Snack Right - Pure De- light." Coffee break snacks, recess snacks, when you're shopping snacks, T.V. snacks, bedtime snacks. Snack attacks are on the rise. Is Snacking 0.K.? Con- trary to some opinions, snacking doesn't have to be - hazardous to your health. But it often is, because snacks loaded with sugar, fat and salt are the most widely advertised and available. In other words, it's what you snack on that is crucial. The Truth About All Those '"Goodies" - When you choose snacks that are high in calories from sugar and fat, you lose in many ways: 1. You may be in for a mouthful of cavities. Bac- teria that cause tooth decay thrive on sugar. And we, Canadians, must be feeding them well - 96 per cent of Canadian adults over 19 years have cavities. 2. That calorie - loaded snack may be replacing one loaded with nutrients which means your body is losing out. 3. Empty calorie 'goodies' have a way of 'going to waist". Too many make a weight problem easy to have. 4. Your body takes snacks high in fat to heart - literally! High fat foods help to harden and clog arteries, leading all too often to a heart attack. There are lots of ways to improve your snacking habits. First of all, know that a good snack is: low in sugar (that means honey too), low in fat and salt, high in nutrients. Then weed those less-than- wholesome snacks from your pantry and ban them for- evermore. Stock up on delicious, nutritious snacks. If you eat out, join the . growing number of Cana- dians who are demanding healthy alternatives: bran muffins instead of dough- nuts, nuts and fresh fruit instead of chocolate bars and other candy. Good Snackin'! PHILP PONTIAC-BUICK LIMITED 10 VANEDWARD DRIVE - PORT PERRY ANNOUNCEMENT R. The Lanes will be residing at 15 Ella St., Port Perry. not enough land at that site for an addition large enough to meet the library needs of the Township in future years. Also, the Board and coun- cil have been assured by the executive of the Port Perry Legion that it has no objec- tion to moving the War Memorial to a new building. The new building will be called the War Memorial Library, and the book of memory and plaque will be on prominent display. . At the meeting Monday night, council also passed a resolution to re-zone the parcel of land from the present C4 to P112, which allows a public building. As well, council agreed to bridge finance the project if necessary, but any carrying or interest charges because of this will be paid by the Library Board. The Board also asked for and received assurance from council that Board members would have input into any decisions the council might make about the future use of the old library building on Queen Street, which now PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 24, 1979 -- 7 Plan new library for lakefront property belongs to the Township. In recent weeks, there has been some suggestion that the site of old Port Perry Arena on Water Street might be considered for a new library. However, this was ruled out for a couple of reasons: it would require extensive grading, and it is zoned commercial, and may some day be sold for this use. The decision to hand over part of the lakefront proper- ty to the Library Board was not an easy one for the council in light of the opposi- tion expressed in recent months by some members of the public. Councillor Crosier men- tioned this fact in his argu- ments against the proposal, but after the vote was taken, he did say that he could accept the decision, and he pledged his full support for the project. If the Board can get the same kind of support from the people of this Township during the fund-raising blitz, work on the new building will likely get underway next spring with completion later in the year.
