Andy Waddy, of R.R.2, Port Perry, has no trouble whatsoever handling this wolf tarantula spider, a native of South America. In fact, Andy has owned one for the past couple of months and says they are getting along just fine, thank you. Andy calls his tarantula Thor' which is probably appropriate. A wolf tarantula may not be everybody's idea of a house pet. Andy Waddy, a 17 year old high school student bought one of the spiders about two monthssago at the Pet Shop in Port Perry, and he finds it absolutely fascinating. He admits that his mother wasn't exactly over-joyed with the idea at first. "But she doesn't pay much attention to it now," he said with a bit of a smile. Andy keeps "Thor" in an aquarium at home, and says that the native of South America is thriving on a diet of grasshoppers, beetles, crickets aud other insects. While the wolf tarantula may be ferocious looking, it is actually quite docile, and Andy has no trouble handling it. "I've never been bitten yet," he explains. Although a tarantula will bite, the effects are said to be about the same as a bee sting. When asked why he would want a large spider for a pet, Andy replies that he simply finds them fascinating and intelligent. "Right now, I'm looking for a scorpion," he says. See you next month, our Christmas meeting. -- Capture Pet Shop owner Jack Owen said last week that he has several of the tarantulas (the Wolf and the Red Foot variety) in stock. "The youngsters really get a kick out of them,"' he said. I could probably sell dozens of them if it were not for objections from the parents. Mr. Owen admits that he is not fussy about handling the tarantulas, which have large furry legs, rand can get almost as big as a dinner plate when full grown. Incidently, while Andy was holding one of the spiders for the picture, a lady came into the store looking for pet food and nearly fainted when she saw the spider in his hand. They may indeed not be for everyone. But look at it this way. A tarantula won't keep you awake all night with its barking, and it won't chase the neighbour's cat up the nearest tree. Or will it?
