For Use In Home Fireplaces PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 31, 1979 -- 15 Heat exchanger cuts fuel consumption drastically When the snow is deep and the north wind blows on a cold winter night, there are few people indeed who don't Car enjoy sitting in front of a crackling fire. A bright fire burning in a fireplace may look nice and give off a sense of warmth, but as for heating a room, well, almost all of it goes right up the chimney. Ingenious Invention John Hamer with his fireplace heat exchanger. The pipe at left connects to an electric fan and the one on the right blows the heated air into the room rather than up the chimney. Robert Zimmerman of Ajax-Picker- ing. Mrs. Higginson, a graduate of The Family Studies programme at the University of Guelph, is past chairman of New- castle Community Care, one of the local Community Care offices in the Region. Since moving to Bowmanville in 1968, Mrs. Higginson has been involved on a voluntary basis in many organizations including Meals on Wheels, Newcastle Social Planning Council, Big Brothers Asso- ciation, as well as the Social Planning Advisory Group of Durham Region and the District Health Council of Durham Region. Community Care now has about 860 volunteers and Mrs. Higginson notes that "our volunteers receive a great deal of satisfaction in helping others, and this is one of our real strengths." Although Mrs. Higginson is pleased with the enormous growth of Community Care, she does see challenges ahead. 'Community Care will have to work hard at maintaining the enthusiasm and energy that has charac- terized this project as our existence "becomes increa- singly taken for granted and the number of clients con- tinues to grow." place heat exchanger three years ago, and says that using it regularly has greatly reduced the oil bills for his 150 year old farm house. The device, which he has been marketing for just under $200, is a series of hollow metal pipes which act as the fireplace grate. A small electric fan blows air through the pipes, the air heats up from the fire, and then is blown out into the living room. And it works. Even a low fire gives off a steady stream of warm air being blown into the room. The metal pipe grating sits in the fireplace, and can be easily removed for cleaning. Mrs. Hamer told the Star last week that they are able to keep their thermostat set at 62 degrees. If they build a fire in the early evening, enough heat is generated that the thermostat will not come on until well after mid- night. Burning about a half a bush cord of wood through the winter, Mrs. Hamer says their fuel consumption dropped from 600 to 325 gallons.
