RY While the provincial government has announced measures to ease the burden Vol. 113 No. 50 in 1980, the crunch may come the following year. And because of the uncer- tainty for 1981, Scugog Township and Brock and Uxbridge, which are in a similar situation, have laun- ched appeals to the Ontario Municipal Board. The new equalized factor- ing system, which uses Wed nesday, October 31,1979 market value as a basis for calculating assessment rather than the old system which froze assessments at the 1970 levels, could hurt rural municipalities like Scugog which have a high proportion of farm and residential assessment in relation to commercial and (Turn to page 2) 36 Pages pS Winning Smile That's a $1,000 smile that Aleksandra [Sandy] Sinclair is wearing. Rape crisis centre to set up in Port Perry A rape crisis centre may be in operation in Port Perry early in the New year. A group of Scugog Town- ship women is now actively working to form the volunt- eer service which will offer support and guidance to the victims of any kind of sexual abuse or assault. Patricia Mowers, director of the newly formed organi- zation, told the Star last week that there will be sev- eral immediate and long range goals of the crisis centre. "We will offer confidential and non-judgemental supp- ort to any victim of rape of sexual assault," said Ms. Mowers. The organization will also work towards promoting changes in the legal and social attitudes regarding sexual assaults, and provide communication and educa- tion to the public in general. Is there a need for such an organization in Port Perry? "We think there is," said Ms. Mowers. "There have been seveal alleged incidents in the past six months in this Township." The organization has re- ceived support from an advi- sory committee made up of representatives from the clergy, medical, law enforcement and legal pro- fession in Scugog. The organization is now in the process of approaching service clubs in the area for financial help, and the Board of Directors will be starting a six week course in Toronto next month on how to set up a Crisis Centre and deal with these kinds of incidents. Ms. Mowers stressed that. any dealings the organiza- tion volunteers have with victims of sexual assault will be in strict confidence, and the organization will not advise a victim to prosecute. "That decision is up to the individual, but if a decision is made to contact the police, the organization will offer any support it can,' she said. Ms. Mowers said that the initial plan is to set up a 24-hour emergency tele- and Scugog. AAA AA AAA AA aaa aaa aaa aa alg accompanied by a dog. castle. Stupid nearly Hallowe'en came five days early for Mr. & Mrs. Paul Clarke, and it nearly cost them their lives. The Scugog Township couple were driving on the Aurora Sideroad near Uxbridge early Sunday morning when the occupants of an on-coming vehicle tossed a large pumpkin at the windshield of their car. It shattered the wind- shield, showering the couple with broken glass. For- tunately, neither was ser- iously hurt, and Mr. Clarke managed to get his car stopped before it went off the road. However, the couple were badly shaken by the incident. "We could have been killed." "I saw the headlights of the oncoming car, and the next thing it was like an explosion when the wind- shield shattered." "There were pieces of pumpkin and broken glass all through the car," he said. Unfortunately, because it was dark, the Clarkes were unable to give police a des- cription of the car or the occupants who pulled this idiotic stunt. Mr. Clarke said his car is damaged to the tune of $400. "But that doesn't matter. They could have killed us. How could somebody be so stupid," he asked?
