Between slow registration, ice cutbacks due to the Old Arena shutdown, we've had our anxious moments but the girls are now hard at work on the ice eager to play in a new league set up between Osha- wa, Whitby and Port Perry. We know this is a large step forward competitively for our girls and the growth of Ringette in the area. We will enter a team in each age group in the league, Tweens (12 and under), Juniors (14 and under), and Belles (16 and under). During the summer we were far from idle as three large fundraising events took place. Thanks to Scugog Lumber Co. who provided us with our booth we worked Western Weekend under the capable direction of Martha and John Franssen, assisted by Fred Canning who put ina good many hours of his time and many of our girls who manned the booth. Port Perry Fair again saw our booth in action with many more parents lending a hand. We thank you all for your support and working time. In September our girls themselves undertook the run their own. fundraising effort. A Bake and Rumm- age Sale headed by Sherri Allen, assisted by Daphne Butt, Jill Kendall and Kelly Raines. Their results were excellent and we highly commend these girls who not only play the game but felt gins The boys soccer team from Greenbank Public School earned a berth in the Regional Finals after winning theD.E.A.A. competition October 18 at Good- wood. Port's top offensive guns had a field day with an unusually flat opponent in what amounted to little more than a shooting drill. The first trickle came early in the first period, with Paul Jones finding the short side on a three-on-one-break. The flow increased with help from Sandy Kiezebrink on a hard, high shot from just inside the blue-line, and Ed Michel's five foot flip of a pass from behind the net, the defensive specialist's first in over two years. Jones added his second of the night, tucking Dave Harris rebound off the left post in the same side. With only 21 seconds left to play in the first, Jones, hustling for a hattrick, had his feet pulled out from under him and slid head first into the end boards. He was rushed to Port Perry Hospital where the injury was diagnosed as a separated shoulder, which should keep him out of strongly enough to help make the league a reality. As we start a new season in a new league, we wish Port Perry Ringettee girls a great year full of good luck, good competition, and best of all good sportsmanship! > action for about six weeks. The first period ended with a strange goal, coming with only .05 left. Ed Michel's shot from the point was batted by his younger brother, Dave, three feet off the ice in front of the Fenelon Falls net. The puck deflected over the goal- ie's shoulder and was slapp-- ed in by Dave Harris, who stood behind, no more than three feet from the goal. The flood gates opened in the second, with Harris, Harry Michel, Gord Burnet, with his first of the season, and Bert Michel with two to stretch the score to ten to zero. Bert is obviously enjoying his new role as forward, moving from his spot on the solid, mobile defence. The deluge slackened in 5 Perry, Brad Puckrin, and Blair Phillips. Second row: Xe . % Carl Baylis, Derek Byers, Eddie Cole, Mike Gibson, Ted Sturman. Back row: Doug Dusty, Jeff Burnet, Shawn Fisher, Jay Branton, Lee Wilbur, Chris Cook- man. Coach Bruce Reid. the third with lawyer Paul Fletcher netting his first two of the season, in only his second game in several years. His first cameona a wrist-shot from directly out in front, taking a pass out of the corner. The other was produced out of sheer second effort, as he shot twice, allowing John Michel to have a poke at it, and finally taking the big Captain's rebound and sliding it under the falling goaltender. Larry "Moose" Mabely rebounded off the scoring on a strong shot from the point, bringing the Port total to a baker's dozen. This time out Port Perry looked like the powerhouse they have the potential to be. It still remains to be seen whether this rather solo oriented team will take the time to develop young talent like Steve Ashmore, Willy Houthuys, Phil Beauchamp, and Ken Elliott. However, if Port can control the corners like they did against Fenelon Falls, it should be an easy season for netminder Rob Michel, who faced only one or two shots all night. Con- gratulations to Chris, Rob's counterpart, who remained calm while Port's snipers shot 2 pounds, 7 ounces of vulcanized rubber into the goal behind him. Port Perry's next game is a rematch against Fenelon Falls, who should be seeking to redeem themselves on the ice, Saturday, November 10th in Little Britain at 6 o'clock. Midgets victorious over Cobourg and Port Hope by Bob Storry Grant Menzies Motors Midgets completed a busy week, which started at home on Monday October 22nd, with an impressive 7 to 4 victory over Cobourg. October 26th at Port Hope, they staged a third period rally to nip the home side 7 to 6. Port outscored Port Hope 5 to 1 in the third period. October 27th at the Hampton arena they lost a close one 4 to 3 to Bowman- ville. This time the tables were reversed as Bowman- ville came from behind, scoring the only three goals in the final period. The previous week on home ice Port earned a 5-5 tie against Bowmanville and went down to defeat in Ajax by a 5 to 2 count. To date the Midgets have played 2 exhibition games and 5 league games. Their record is 2 wins, 4 losses and 1 tie. They have scored 26 goals while allowing the opposition 27. Penalties have been the deciding factor in most of the games. The two games in which we drew the féwest penalties were a tie and a win. Incidentally, they were also the most entertaining and pleasing games to watch.
