IY IRR HAE FAS SAFO A RAL RE ER A A urd hh Sw No scoring punch in 4-3 loss to Clippers Injuries, suspensions hand-cuff Missing a half dozen regu- lars and coming off a gruell- ing seven games in the past 14 days, the Port Perry MoJacks just could not muster enough firepower Sunday night at the Scugog Arena and were nipped 4-3 by the Stouffville Clippers. The loss, coupled with a 10-5 defeat in Uxbridge (see separate story) on Friday evening, leaves MoJacks with a three and six record after nine games, well back in the league standings. The MoJacks have run into a host of problems in the early season, namely injur- ies and suspensions to key personnel. Defenseman Rob Kemp and Rob Garrow were both out of the line-up on Sunday. Kemp is gone for at least six weeks with a broken bone in his ankle, and Garr- ow has a pulled leg muscle. Chick Tyson, another regu- lar along the blue line, miss- ed the game because of a suspension picked up Octo- ber 21 in Bowmanville. He'll be back this week. Newcom- er Kelly Neals also missed Sunday's game because of the flu, and burly forward Mike Healey is sitting out a suspension picked up in the Uxbridge match. But the player the MoJacks really miss so far this season is Bill Owen. The rugged and aggressive de- fenseman has had knee prob- lems since before the open- ing game, and while he saw spot duty for two periods on Sunday night, it was obvious that his knee is far from ready. Just when he will return to top form remains unknown. Port Perry coach Doug Scott was visibly dejected following the loss to Stouff- ville. Prior to the game he had told his team to concen- trate on defensive hockey, and while the MoJacks only gave up three goals (the last was into an open net) the team just could not get un- tracked to mount any kind of a sustained scoring threat. Stouffville took an early 1-0 lead when Ken Dix convert- ed a goal mouth pass with Stu Cochrane and Darrin Jobb in the penalty box for the MoJacks. At the 7:20 mark of the first, Bob Hughes made it 2-0 when he scored on a shot from a sharp angle that seemed to handcuff MoJack All tied up with nowhere to go. It was that kind of an evening for the Stouffville Clippers Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. Injuries and suspensions have played a big role in the MoJacks fortunes early in this Junior C season. forward Jamie Eyman and the Port Perry MoJacks as they simply could not get un-tracked and went down to defeat 4-3 at the hands of goalie Merle Schewaga. Port Perry was badly out- played in the first period, missing passes, coughing up the puck, and generally look- ing confused and disorganiz- ed. On the few occasions when the team did get some- thing going in the Stouffville end, goalie Dean Howse held his ground and made several good stops. At 10:46 of the second, Clippers went ahead 3-0 on a power play goal by Bruce Rugglis, while Phil Cochrane was off for elbowing. Rugg- lis finished off the play at the side of the Port Perry goal after his team-mates had maintained good puck control deep in the MoJack end. Port Perry finally got on the board at the 13 minute mark of the second when Phil Cochrane pounced on a 0.H.A. Junior 'C' Hockey 3 SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4th - 7:30 P.M. Just seconds before Cochrane's goal, Mo- Jack captain Bill Bridge had missed a wide open net. MoJacks began to play with a little more authority in the third period, and at the mid-way point Phil Cochrane narrowed the gap to 3-2 with a hard slap shot from the left face-off circle, again on the power play. The score stayed 3-2 until the final minute of the game when Schewaga was lifted from the net for an extra forward and Clipper defense- man Harold Wideman bank- ed a shot into the goal from behind his own blue line. Captain Bill Bridge count- ed the final MoJack goal off a scramble with just two seconds left in the game, to make the final score 4-3. It was obvious that the MoJacks were hurting dur- ing the game. The only scoring threats came when Bill Bridge and Phil Coch- rane were on the ice, and they both played more than 40 minutes. Clipper goalie Dean Howse turned in a solid game, mak- ing key stops when the MoJacks did manage to find the target. MoJacks are now idle until this Saturday, November 3, when they travel to Beaver- ton for a match against the Ice Hawks, and the next evening, Sunday, they are back home against the tough Cobourg club. Coach Scott is hoping that the lay-off will give his play- ers a chance to re-group and allow some of the injured to get back in the line-up. Face off against Cobourg this Sunday is 7:30, and the two games are now crucial for Port Perry. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 31, 1979 -- 21 MoJacks 1:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Music by . . .
