by Danny Millar Larocque Electric opened the Port Perry Broomball Association three game slate with a tight 1-0 win over Emmerson Insurance on Sunday, October 26. Utica Auto Body doubled Brian's Towing 4-2 and C & B Live- stock blanked Blackstock 2-0. Larocque's Danny McKee netted the only goal of the match after 4:32 of play in which Larocque dominated play and pressed Emmerson goalie Bill Gerber. Barry McLure drew an assist on the goal. Late in the opening seg- ment Emmerson ran into two concurring minor penal- ties and had to play at a two man disadvantage for nearly two minutes. They killed both off with little trouble. The middle period was close checking and neither side enjoyed a glaring scor- ing chance. Larocque came the closest when Colin Wack- ett missed the net with a close shot. Larocque was foiled on another Wackett opportunity in the third period when he and forward Bill Bridge comprised a two on one. Wackett's return pass to Bridge was broken up by defenceman Brian Jury. In the fading minutes Larocque again had their chances with both teams playing five a side. Wackett, McLure, and Bridge all missed chances to put their team ahead with A Novice defeated The Port Perry Pearce Auctioneers fought a hard Broomball action five minutes to go. Gerber came up with the saves. Gerber's counterpart, Kevin Beer, came up with the shutout. Another netminder, from C & B recorded a goose-egg. Mark Lee, returning from a suspension, put C & B ahead when he culminated sharp passes from Rob Evans and Ken Fraser after four and a half minutes of action. Lee tipped the ball into an open net after a pass from Evans. . The play came on a delayed penalty call that was signalled in the C & B end. This was a rarely seen occasion where the goaler was removed on a delay and his teams ends up scoring. The vast majority of the time the goalie will rush to his bench only to have the whistle blow before the extra man reaches the ice. Evans got the second C& B marker when he came out from a goal mouth scramble with the ball to score, with 6:02 yet to be played in the second. Blackstock threatened in the final frame but could not break C & B's second shutout bid. C & B has allowed just two goals in three league matches. They should be even stronger when Ken Bry- ant returns from the sus- pended list next week. The most eventful game of the three was Utica's victory against Brians. The game was not four minutes old when Steve Preston put Brian's ahead on a deflection off Frank Field- ing's blast from over the blue line. Utica took the lead on two 24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 31, 1979 Bantam A drop fwo games RT a 5 'Need more practices" says Coach by Danny Millar Port Perry Beare Motors Bantam A hockey team lost two games, 6-2 to Port Hope and a 5-0 shutout to Cobourg last week. Port Perry performed the role of generous hosts as they were blanked by Co- bourg at home on Wednes- day, October 24, despite a superb goaltending perfor- mance by Ken Harmon. Harmon kept Port in the game up until the third per- iod with key stops. Cobourg dented the score- board first with 5:52 to go in the first period when the Port defence left two men wide open in front of the goal. A pass came from behind the net off Paul Choi- vere's stick to David Waldie. Waldie's shot was blocked but Bill Jex netted the rebound. Harmon made two crucial stops on Scott Murphy on his doorstep midway through the period. Donnie Young had two good opportunities to tie the game but was foiled by Robert Turland. Cobourg took a two goal lead on a power play late in the period, with Vaugnn McKee serving his second minor of the match. With 1.03 to go a blue line slap shot from Andy Hlapcic was deflected by Mike Esser past Harmon. Harmon made a save on Choivere's breakaway with less than a minute remain- ing. The Port Perry net- minder started the second period the way he left off the first, with a great stop, this time on John Thompson. After the contest Port Perry coach Doug Scott com- mented that the "Goalkeep- ing has been good." In the middle period Port began to carry the play to Cobourg a little more and the forwards began to backchec, reducing the scoring chances against. Cobourg didn't score in this frame. The visitors did score in the final period, however, three times in fact. The first came on a two man break- away with 9:17 to go when Thompson threaded the needle with a pass to Waldie, who scored. Murphy and Choivere add- ed points in the third as well. The day before, Tuesday, October 23, the Port squad incurred its first loss of the week in Port Hope. The Port Hope Sports Complex has been a graveyard for Doug Scott as he has lost twice there with the Juniors (which he also coaches) and once with the Bantams. Port Hope connected first, after 6:10 of play on Port Perry goalie Doug Arscott. The play came off a face-off on Arscott's glove side, which Port Hope won and scored on. Center Jeff Johnstone put Port Perry on the board when he connected on a rebound of a defender's leg with 4:02 to go. The other Port Perry goal came with 8:52 gone in the second. A shot by Russ Jones was blocked, but Young got the rebound and handed off the John Vax, who made the red light flash. After the Cobourg contest coach Scott compared the two efforts of his charges. "] wasn't pleased with Port Hope but I was very pleased with Cobourg. The forwards have been playing adequately", he stated. He also said that the defence has been inconsistent. "Playing in a stronger calibre league has brought out the inadequacies in team play early in the season," Scott said. He believes that his team needs more practic- es and games to get into top form.
