NIM TAA ht EAT 2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 31, 1979 Tax break From page 1 industrial. Market values for farm and residential property have increased more drama- tically than those of com- mercial and industrial property. At the meeting of Scugog council October 22, adminis- trator Earl Cuddie told members that if there were no changes made by the provincial government, Scugog could be facing an increase of 25 per cent in the Township's financial contri- bution to Durham Region, or a figure of about $200,000. However, the provincial government has announced NEED PHOTO COPIES? We cando them for you. PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 that no municipality will face an increase of more than five per cent in its share of regional costs, and resource equalization grants will remain at least the same in 1980 as this year. Also, the government announced that for the pur- pose of the Resource Equali- zation Grant, residential assessment will be discoun- ted by 15 per cent in those municipalities "with little industrial and commercial assessment." . The changes in the method of calculating assessments were the subject of a joint meeting of the Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock Town- ship council earlier this month in Port Perry, and fears were expressed at that meeting about the possible shift in taxation which could put a burden on these and other rural municipalities. While the provincial government now will only allow the increase to be five per cent for 1980, just what will happen in 1981 remains to be seen. port perry hydro p.o. box 420 port perry, ontario LOB 1NO PHONE 985-2287 * PORT PERRY HYDRO COMMISSION'S POLICY FOR OVERDUE ACCOUNTS Bills are mailed out on or near the 1st of the month. Staff problems resolved The chairman of the Blackstock Arena Board says that problems sur- rounding the hiring of staff for the arena this year have been resolved. John Goss said that a special meeting between members of the Arena Board and the Scugog Township council finance committee was held October 23, after Big Brothers meet for Hallowe'en Breakfast "The nice thing about an organization like the Big Brothers is you can see the results of your work', Terry Kelly, a prominent Oshawa lawyer told a'group of 70 Big and Little Brothers, and invited guests last Sunday morning. Mr. Kelly was the guest speaker at the Big Brother's Hallowe'en Breakfast held at Conway Gardens and in addition to speaking briefly about the organization, he kept the Little Brothers en- tertained by way of relating some of his many experienc- es in his capacity as an avid sports fan. Mr. Kelly encouraged the boys to work hard and have a goal. "Anything is within your grasp if you really want it", he told them. The Hallowe'en Breakfast was the Big Brothers way of thanking their volunteers and supporters for the work they have done for the organ- ization during the past year, and according to president Mike Wilson, will probably become an annual event. 193 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY 985-7306 The one you're looking for. ALL LINES OF GENERAL INSURANCE the Scugog council demand- ed an explanation why a manager and assistant man- ager were hired by the Board for work at the Arena this winter. Following the meeting with the council finance committee, Mr. Goss ex- plained that the Board felt it necessary to hire an assist- ant manager this year for two reasons: there should be an additional person trained to operate the artificial ice plant machinery, and the expected work-load at the arena this year is too much for one person to handle. "Last year the manager worked as much as 100 hours per week, and the Board felt that is too much," said Mr. Goss. At its meeting October 22, Scugog council passed a motion asking for an ex- planation why the Board had decided to hire two men to operate the arena at a cost of $10,800, whereas last year the manager was paid about $8000 total. Mr. Goss said that the manager this year will work 21 weeks and the assistant for 19 weeks, and the total cost will be $10,800 plus about $400 for such things as Unemployment Insurance premiums and Workmen's Compensation. Ice rental rates at the arena this year have been raised to $30 per hour for non-Township residents and $20 per hour for those living in Scugog. Area councillor Jerry Jackman, a member of the council finance committee attended the meeting last week, and he said the reasons given by the Board were satisfactory. Rape crises centre here From page 1 would like to set up a small office in the Township. Ms. Mowers said the or- ganization estimates it needs about $500 for start-up mon- ey and about $110 month for the telephone answering ser- vice, and likely will have this set up by February. There are 15 crisis centres already in operation throughout Ontario, mostly in the larger metropolitan areas. Anyone wishing further in- formation about the newly formed Scugog organization should call 986-5581 or write to P.O. Box 1226 in Port Perry.
