Noted Sociologist Predicts PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 31, 1979 -- 3 Future bright for Canadian family units A noted researcher and sociologist predicts that pre- sent trends concerning fam- ily life in this country will continue, but the family unit has no substitute and re- mains crucial to the future of Canada. Dr. Ben Schlesinger, father of four children, married for 20 years, and a professor of social work at the University of Toronto, was addressing an audience of more than 100 people in Port Perry Monday night in the first of a series of Family Life lectures sponsored by local organizations. In a lively and animated address he noted several trends that are occurring Early morning fire destroys horse barn A fire early Saturday morning completely destroy- ed a horse barn and equip- ment at the Pinewood Eques- trian Centre on Highway 12, south of Manchester. Firefighters from the Scu- gog department answered the call about 1:30 a.m. and were still on the scene five hours later. A passing motorist spotted flames coming from the north end of the barn. He notified the owners of Pine- wood Place who tried to control it with fire extin- guishers, and then called the department. Eight riding horses in the Regular $35.00 barn were led to safety before the flames and heat became too intense. Riding equipment was also saved, but $1500 worth of hay, straw, grain, and some farm equipment was lost. The wood frame barn with steel siding contained rine box and six standing stalls, and the loss is estimated at more than $20,000. The cause of the fire has nat been determined. The owner of Pinewood said that accommodation has been found for the horses boarded there for the winter, but he is not sure when the barn will be re-built. The average family now consists of 1.5 children, and he suggested that one of the reasons for this is econ- omics. "It now costs about $60,000 to raise a child to age 18. From a strictly economic point of view, kids are be- coming a liability," he stated at one point during his hour long talk. Dr. Schlesinger predicted that the present rate of div- orce in first marriages will continue, and likewise will the number of second mar- riages increase. "This is a healthy sign," he said. "It proves that people don't want to live their lives alone." He suggested that the success rate for second mar- riages is higher than first marriages, and part of the reason is that couples who marry for a second time are older and more mature, and 'have learned a few lessons from their first marriage." Dr. Schlesinger said that one of the main reasons for marriage breakdown (about 50,000 per year) is lack of maturity, and this is espec- The Scugog Rape Crisis Centre got a financial shot in the arm Saturday night when Norm Nicol, president of the Scugog Lake GRS radio club and Irene Train, ofthe Court Lady Snowbird, Nestleton, each presented cheques for $100. People also do not appear to want to work as hard at keeping a marriage to- gether, he suggested. "It's much easier just to open the door and go," he stated. A generation ago, he said, people would some- times go through what he >a Re SP SP Cn called "emotional divorce." They would stop commun- icating, but remain legally married and living under the same roof for the sake of the children or what the neigh- bours might think.
