> VAM DE 35 ey Lh SO EA RY HERON \ A NO RE Iau wh 0 Lake Scugog Hockey League by Danny Millar Sonya and Port Perry tangled in the second game oof the Lake Scugog Hockey League on Sunday, Novem- ber 4 and the result was an exciting 3-3 deadlock. Last week Port Perry watched helplessly as they Pe a three goal lead slip away but this week they were on the other end as they battled back after falling behind 2-0. Sonya's Dave Parish and Mark Blanchard assisted on Dan Carty's opening goal fearly in the first period. The second goal came on a face off in the Port Perry zone which Tim Shakotho won and shovelled over to right winger Blanchard for the goal, that Blanchard Aflipped over Port's fallen goalkeeper Ken Wells. Wells played sharply for Port as he kept his team in the game right up until the end. After the second Sonya score he stopped a two-on- one. # Seconds after Wells' save Larry Page stole the puck from a Sonya blueliner and beat Ken Irvine with an excellent wrist shot to the upper glove corner on Irvine. It came with about 5:43 to go #n the first segment. (Times often are inexact because the LSHL does not stop the clock on whistles, except in the last two minutes of each period). Larry Wark was sentenced for holding a Sonya athlete @ith 18:22 to go in the second period but his punishment was shortened-when Parish scored on a slap shot from the point after a pass from Geoff Field. A three way passing play accounted for the second Xort Perry point. Rick Hope had the puck originally in the slot but passed back to Richie LeFort. LeFort slipped it over to a teammate for the score. The final two periods were closer checking than the first but were no less entertain- ing. The weakness on the Port defence was over- shadowed by the sharp work of the man in the mask, Wells, for Port. After Port Perry tied the score with 11:05 to go there were not many great scoring chances. Richard Honey got the equalizer when he came out of a scramble in front of the Sonya goal and hit the post with his shot. He made sure on the rebound, tucking it into the corner of the net. The effort was an im- proved one for Port Perry as they were coming off a tight 5-4 loss to Bethany MoHawks in which they squandered a 3-0 lead. Novices victorious over Uxbridge 2-1 by Danny Millar Port Perry Novices de- feated Uxbridge in a highly entertaining hockey match by a scant 2-1 margin, on Friday November 2 at Port Perry. Playing in front of a wildly enthusiastic home crowd may have aided Port Perry. Another aid came in the form of defenceman Neil Mark, who was brought up from the house league system just before the game. Mark had performed in a practice an hour before game time but showed no ill effects. He was not out of place along the blue line, that is, when he decided to stay on the stripe. He is overly enthusiastic in wan- ting to force the play. Mike Sorley had a couple of clean scoring chances in the scoreless first period but could not dent the Uxbridge netminder. Jarrett Harmon put Port Perry on the board when he took centreman Jeff Mills' pass right off the draw and deposited it into the net. Harmon narrowly missed adding a second score when his trickle shot hit the post during a scramble. Tom Fawns replied for Uxbridge when he bested Port Perry puck stopper Chris McConnell on a break away with 55 seconds left in the second. Center Steve Christie of Uxbridge was shaken up in the third period. He was aided by Port coach Gary McConnell and when he regained his footing was given a warm applause. He later was tagged with his team's only penalty, one of only two punishments handed out. Derek Fitz- gerald warranted the other - minor. Center Mathew Durward scored the winner when he combined with Harmon and Paul Wylie on another break away. It came 3:36 into the final period. | Broncos drop game to Falls #» by Danny Millar The Colin Ball Motors Broncos rallied from a 3-0 deficit before bowing 4-3 to the Fenelon Falls Flyers in Midget B Hockey play on Monday, October 29, in Port Eprerry. Fenelon counted all of - their goals in the first period, except for the winner. Brant Jones netted the first one Just 1:22 after the opening whistle on an assist from Jeff Pendlebury. Darryl Patterson chipped in a first period score and before the period ended his team had compiled a 3-0 advantage. One of the keys to the Fenelon Falls attack was the forechecking. They were physically a bigger team than the Broncos and it « Broomball action (From Page 21) McLure was serving a delay of game penalty for knocking his own net off its 'moorings when St. John scored to give C & B their final point. St. John banged in his own rebound and Scott also had a crack at it, mean- ing that C & B had three shots at the net without the Larocque defensive corps ¢ clearing it. Larocque got a power play goal back when Bill Bridge connected with Randy Craw- ¥ ford for delay of game. The pass came from McLure out from the boards to Bridge who let a 25-foot shot go in the direction of Keith Fraser in the C & B net. Fraser missed it. The goal came with 1:55 to play. Brian's Towing and Black- stock, two of the circuit's lesser teams played dull broomball for two periods with neither team scoring. An early dismissal preven- ted a spectator from watch- ing the conclusion of the listless match. ; Nanguard Trust of Canada Limited 1312 % ANNUAL - ONE YEAR Don Forder Insurance Agency Ltd. 24 Water Street - Port Perry - 985-8471 showed at the start. Ron Rumford finally broke the ice for Port when he scored on a John Butler rebound. Butler's attempt was stopped but the rebound found itself on Rumford's stick. Rumford wheeled around and ricocheted a shot off the post. Daryl Carnochan elected to shoot on a two on one advantage early in the third period and his strategy paid off when his wrist shot along the ice beat the opposing goalie, with 2:39 gone in the period. Like Carnochan's, Robert Cook's goal, which tied the game at three, was unassis- ted. He knotted the fray with 8:12 to go. The Flyers winning marker came on a power play with 5:40 remaining in a slow, whistle plagued period. It came on another Port Perry defensive miscue when they failed to clear the puck, and Gord Cawker stopped at the blue line. Cawker let a slap shot go in the direction of goalkeeper Paul Bateman but before it could reach him it was re- directed by Robbie Carpen- ter. Bateman played last year in PeeWee. He has ap- parently advanced a level before his eligibility is up and is being given a chance to prove himself in a tougher competition. After a bad first period he improved significantly in taking the loss. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., November 7, 1979 -- 23 CHOOSE. veveeee... YOUR PRICE SELECT...
