10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., December 12, 1979 Spo rts Felt RARE with Danny Millar oh 4 Seven goals for Phil Cochrane The Port Perry MoJacks humiliated the Port Hope Panthers 12-4 at the Scugog Arena last Saturday evening and MoJack forward Phil Cochrane set a new Junior C record with seven goals. MoJacks thoroughly dominated the Panthers in every department taking a 6-1 lead after 20 minutes, boosting it to 9-3 by the end of the second, and then rubbed salt in the wound with three more goals in the third to make it an even dozen. The victory was a sweet one for the MoJacks for a couple of reasons. It proved that the team is capable of beating a club that is near the top in the Junior C standings, and it more than made up for two early season defeats the MoJacks took at the hands of the Panthers. Captain Bill Bridge gave his team a 1-0 lead at the 7:26 mark of the first on the power play when he tipped a shot past goalie Joe Pokusa, with Phil Cochrane and Todd Wilbur drawing the assists. Just past the ten-minute mark of the first with MoJacks playing with a man in the penalty box, Phil Cochrane knocked down a clearing pass at his own blue line, raced the length of the ice and beat Pokusa cleanly. That set the stage for Cochrane's scoring rampage as he snapped in four more goals before the end of the first period, and the bewil- dered Panthers left the ice shaking their heads and wondering what they had to do to put the brakes on the MoJacks scoring machine. Actually, the first period could very well have gone against the MoJacks, as the > Panthers applied intense pressure during four Port Perry minor penalties, and were it not for some clever goaltending by Raymond Gibson, the complexion of the game might have turned around early. However, by the end of the first period, the Panthers were completely demoralized. i \ RY (a : a RTS SL aN 5 a LEA REE SS Yotad On Monday Dec. 3, 1979 Si Port Perry Malmont Farms Wi Atoms travelled to Stouff- ville. Healey netted probably the neatest marker of the even- ing at the 5:40 mark of the second with Port Perry a man short. He took a pass at the Port Hope blue line, picked the puck out of his skates, cut around a defen- der and drilled a shot to the corner. Cannon's goal also came on a clever individual effort as he battled for a loose puck, broke into the clear, and beat Pokusa with a clean shot. Veteran Stu Cochrane notched a marker for the MoJacks late in the third after he was sent into the clear on passes from Darrin Jobb and Todd Wilbur. Defenseman Charlie Brown made it an even dozen in the third period when he bounced a shot from the blue line off Neil Palmer who had replaced Pokusa in the Port Hope net. For the Panthers, smooth skating Terry Watts clicked for two markers, while singles went to Bob Croll and Craig Flynn. Certainly the story of the game was the scoring explosion from Phil Cochrane and the new Junior C record for most goals in one game, but the entire team played impressive hockey. Darrin Jobb and Rob Garrow were both in high gear, and after a slow start this season, Jobb is beginn- ing to play the way he did in his rookie season last year. Along the blue line, rookies John Robertson and Charlie Brown are showing more poise with every game they get under their belts, and Todd Wilbur and Clark Menzies also turned in effec- tive performances. Port's markers were scored by Robbie Baker assisted by Scott Feasby; Robbie Baker, his third of the game, from Steven Durham, and David Burnett scored unassisted. The score ended 6-3 in favour of Port, who were getting hungry for a win. The boys played well and were able to make their passes work to their advantage in this game. Port were scheduled to play Bancroft in the first Two great victories for Traves of the Selects helped out the Malmont Farms Atoms in this game. On Friday, Dec. 7, 1979 Malmont Farms Atoms hosted Lindsay for their second game of the season. Defeating Lindsay 2-0 in their first encounter Port looked forward to their second meeting. Port hustl- ed throughout this game, moving the puck well, with good checking on the part of both forward and defense- men. The first period went scoreless leaving everyone to think it was going to be another close dual between game on Saturday, however, some late changes matched us against Sharon. The first game was wide open hockey with both teams skating and checking hard. A 100 percent effort by every Pacer started Port off towards the championship as they defeated Sharon by a narrow 4 to 3 margin. Good Atoms these two teams. Port turn- ed it on in the second period picking up 3 goals and 3 more in the third period, ending the score 6-0. Scoring for Port: David Burnett picked up a Hat trick with singles going to Steven Durham, John Harmon, and David Culbert, who is a real digger and hustler, and has added aggressiveness and strength to the forward line. Assists went to John Lally, Brad Menzies, and John Harmon. Steven Whalen and Stacey Ballingall shared the shut- out. MoJacks trounce Port Hope Panthers So refereeing contributed to making this a fast exciting game, with very few penal- ties or stoppages in play. Port opened the scoring when Doug Potts connected with Brian Mikkelsen and Todd Wilbur getting assists. Kevin Long made it 2 to 0 when he dived into the goal crease to tip a puck over the line that the goaltender had been unable to smother on Paul Storry's shot. Sharon cut our lead to one goal by the end of the second period. Bob Horton restored our 2 goal lead early in the third period with Scott Sandison and Kevin Long assisting. Sharon came right back with a pair of counters to tie the score. Overtime looked like a definite possibility as the final minutes of the third period ticked away, however Doug Potts, who was flying all game, wanted no part of overtime and made certain of it when he blasted the winner into the net with one minute and 4 seconds left to play in regulation time. The Pacers second game was on Sunday at 12:00 noon owards Port the MoJacks routed the Panthers 12-4 Saturday night at the Scugog Arena. against Keswick. The Keswick team played a much more physical type of game that the Sharon team. A few of the Pacers, who were maybe not too wide awake after the late night pillow fights? etc. etc., at the motel room the night before were rudely awakened when they got caught with their heads down. Brian Mikkelsen, who earlier admitted to being one of the few who got a good night's sleep,(he bunked with the team's trainer) certainly proved his point on the ice. In the first minute of play Brian back-passed the puck from the corner opt into the area just to the left of the slot where Todd Blayone moved up from his defense position and whistled it by the goal tender. Brian made it 2 to 0 three minutes later when he scored with Doug Potts and Todd Wilbur drawing assists.
