PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., December 19, 1979 -- 15 Atom Stars whip On Tuesday Dec. 11th the Uxbridge Atom team hosted the Malmont Farms Atoms. Meeting for the second time this season Port defeated Uxbridge again by a score of 6-0. The first period was score- less with Port scrambling in front of the Uxbridge net in many desparate attempts to get the puck past the goalie. Port missed scoring chances even to ringing the puck off the goal posts. John Lally, assisted by Dave Culbert, finally put Port on the scoreboard at the 3:59 mark of the second period. This goal seemed to open up the game for Port and they kept the play in the Uxbridge end. Early in the third period Port scored two more goals- Dave Burnett assisted by John Lally and Brad Menzies from Blair Phillips. Port then took a penalty but John Harmon, assisted by John Lally scored a short-handed goal. Port picked up two more goals before the final buzzer: Steve Durham from Robbie Baker, and John Lally, assisted by Dave Burnett. Uxbridge didn't manage to get many shots on Ports net which was tended by Steve Whalen and Stacey Ballin- gall. Uxbridge took three tripping penalties with Port getting only one. John Lally earned four points in this game but he's .never heard his name pronounced so many differ- ent ways before. STRONG WIN On Friday Dec. 14th after chanting in the halls, the Malmont Farms Atom team came flying onto the ice, and for the next thirty-five minutes they never stopped. After losing their last match against-the Bowmanville Toros 7-3 they were out to win. The first period consisted of good, fast hockey with Bowmanville scoring two goals before John Lally, assisted by Dave Culbert, retaliated with only 10 seconds remaining. Bowmanville opened the scoring in the second period but Robbie Baker, assisted by John Harmon, soon brought the tally to 3-2 still in favour of the Toros. Novice Well, fate brought Uxbridge and Port Perry together again in the final championship game. Although both teams tired after a long day, they each were still eager to win. Port opened up the score by Clair Cornish who carried the puck from the blue line on an. unassisted goal. Uxbridge came back. Credit for goal number 2 goes to Jeff Mills assisted by Paul Wylie and Mike Sorley. Uxbridge hit us again, now two opponents In the third period the Bowmanville team became frustrated and played short- handed much of the time. Port took advantage of this by tallying up three more goals to bring the final score to 5-3. Scoring for Malmont Atoms were Dave Burnett from John Lally, and Dave ¥ Culbert, Steve Durham and Dave Culbert, both unassist- ed. The Malmont Atoms play- ed an excellent game of hockey with fast skating, accurate passing and good defensive action; maybe this is a result of the extra ice-time at the tournament last Saturday. Port Perry took only two penalties in this game against Bowman- ville who tallied up a total of eight penalties. Stars tied. Finally game winner Jarett Harmon relieved the tension for all the players and fans, the last goal with a big help from Paul Wylie. Goalie Chris McCannell was awarded the most valuable player, and with no doubt he indeed deserved it. Port Perry had only one penalty. Special mentions are a must for Brent McMillan, Mike Toye, Derek Lewis, Derek Fitzgerald, and Mike Feasby as they also gave 100 percent.
